Black Cold Coffee
UFO Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Captain midnight and Captain cruise
Out on the ocean
Like a storm of bad news
It took three monkeys in a plastic mac
To fit inside a paper sack

And they're cooking up an alibi
Cooking up some steam
Out in the madness
Somewhere in Orleans
They had a plan,
They had a plot
Beggars and blues was all they got

Black cold coffee
Black Irish soup
Cold on a silver spoon
She's dancing through hoops

Baby's wishing on a wishing well
She's moving up
And ringing her bell
Can't fly to heaven
On a persian rug
So put some coins in the old sailor mug

They travelled up together
From the coast
East of Aldgate
Silently like ghosts
They had a scam,
They had a scheme
For drunks and bums counting beans

Black cold coffee
Black Irish soup
Cold on a silver spoon
She's dancing through hoops

Solo

Black cold coffee
Black Irish soup

Cold on a silver spoon
She's dancing through hoops

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Black Cold Coffee" by UFO are packed with a great deal of imagery and metaphor, which give the song its unique meaning. The first stanza sets the tone for the remainder of the song, with Captain Midnight and Captain Cruise setting sail on the ocean, causing chaos wherever they go. The metaphor of bad news is also used, which suggests that these characters bring nothing but trouble along with them. Three monkeys in a plastic mac attempting to fit in a paper sack is another memorable metaphor, possibly referencing the struggle that comes with keeping secrets.

The second stanza continues this sense of intrigue, describing the two captains as "cooking up an alibi". There is a sense of danger and excitement surrounding their actions, which the lyrics suggest are taking place in Orleans. The use of the words "madness" and "plot" further adds to this feeling of danger. However, the plan doesn't seem to be as successful as they had hoped, with "beggars and blues" being all they have to show for their efforts.

The chorus of the song revolves around the central metaphor of black cold coffee and black Irish soup. The imagery is dark and bleak, suggesting that the characters are struggling with addiction or depression. The reference to the Persian rug and wishing well also adds to the sense of desperation and longing that the lyrics convey.

Overall, "Black Cold Coffee" by UFO is an excellent example of how lyrics can give a song its unique meaning. The use of metaphor and imagery helps to paint a vivid picture of the story behind the song.

Bwwww give me the more melodic old school UFO. Not this noisy repertoire by aging guys who want to pretend they are not getting older, by playing louder. Front man remains a fantastic singer, but I would have appreciated it if he would have remained closer to the old stuff. There's plenty of room for change, but the core has to be there. Deep Purple is a good example of a band who's doing just that. This stuff here clearly is for another audience, fine with me if new audiences love it, as long as the older fans have the right to put on faces like they just took a bite in a sour grape.
