Ulver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Daddy′s flown across the ocean
Leaving just a memory
Snapshot in the family album
Daddy what else did you leave for me
Daddy what d'ya leave behind for me
All in all it was just a brick in the wall
All in all it was all just bricks in the wall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ulver's version of Another Brick In The Wall are a powerful commentary on the impact of absent fathers on children. The opening line, "Daddy's flown across the ocean, leaving just a memory," sets the tone for the rest of the song, which explores the feelings of abandonment and loss that the singer experiences as a result of their father's absence. The line "Snapshot in the family album" suggests that the singer is nostalgic for the time when their father was still present in their life, but can only remember him through old photographs.

The repeated question, "Daddy, what else did you leave for me?" highlights the sense of emptiness and longing that the singer feels in their father's absence. The answer, "All in all it was just a brick in the wall, all in all it was all just bricks in the wall," suggests that the father's absence is just one of many bricks that have contributed to the singer's emotional wall. The obstacles in their life are mounting, and each one contributes to a larger structure that separates them from the world. The repetition of the phrase "all in all" emphasizes the idea that the singer's emotional walls are not just a product of one event, but are the result of many painful experiences.

eh, well, I like it a lot, but as much as I love both bands I can't really compare them. The Wall was maybe the second or 3rd cd I got in the mid-80s, from my GF on my birthday. I think it's brilliant. And I think Ulver is brilliant. Two of my fave bands.

Now that sounds REALLY stalkerish.
