At the time? Show me a better arena shooter released before or since UT. All of them are either ripoffs of UT or Quake3 (which, with its complexity of a stick, looks poorly in comparison), taking the best parts of those games and not improving anything much (apart from the graphics, which on the other hand are sometimes TOO flashy).

I think my favorite part of this game was playing it to completion, and then discovering just how much more expansive it is on multiplayer with the customer maps.. I remember getting addicted to the monster levels and the obstacle courses. So much fun.

Now that i work as a lawyer, i still listen to this in my phone to make it through the day without killing everyone... every time i screw things up or things arn't going my way, i remember that with this song were no rage quits or things like that, the only thing u had to do is to respawn and go with boiling blood to face ur enemies until they exploded by ur flak cannon or with ur pistol... good memories, and thx to this song i remain young everyday as a young fps from the heart gamer...

Ahh....dodging buzz saws from Reapers, getting blown to bits by the shock cannon combo, jumping over 30 feet into the air in low grav, only to be blasted apart by cluster rocket fire, mini gunning the hell out of your best friend in CTF, Flak Monkeying into a killing spree, only to watch it all end when someone Redeems you in the face.

Used to play UT as a kid, school LAN was our life, lol. Good times, good times. Our principal kicked butt, he allowed us to form a club which was entitled to stay after school and have access to the school network & puters.

Now that I think of it, what a progressive man he was! What the heck? In eastern, rural Finland, in the 90's? Whhhaaat! What actually happened? :S lol, should give him a call and give huge props.

My first pc game that I played hc and I allways came back to it cause of awesome soundtrack. Also they are first to implement "first blood, godlike, unstopable, dominating" phrases wich later on most of the games stole for their player morale boosting. UT 99 is something really special and the best of the best! :)

everytime i listen to this i get flashbacks of pulse beams, shock cores in space, fast but slow moving rocket projectiles and the whirring of barrels followed by flak. everytime i try to explain to somebody the flashes of color in my head they always think im insane.

it sound like glorious times...i havent done this but i have great memories with that game, and everyday i see how perfect it is, how skilfull, fast and smart you gotta be to play it and have decent stats, that game sets apart the pros from the other gamers!

@Llanovanya Hell yeah man, this track in an instagib match on Liandri was pure audio-visual perfection. Nothing beat getting into a flow and racking up double kills, multi kills, mega kills as the melody kicked in a couple minutes into the song. :D

Id have to agree with you even you can also play UT over the net as well. But I also agree that there is nothing better than getting together with your bros and blowing the crap out of each other and being able to witness their reactions and feel the atmosphere of real multiplayer, there is nothing like it. Oh and there is practically no lag whatsoever.

I'd say that the original Unreal Tournament, while bringing back very good memories, was not as good as Unreal Tournament 2004 due to certain limitations. UT2004 allowed for much more fluid movement, such as bouncing off walls, introduced an onslaught mode which was fairly amazing, and just imporved the whole formula in general. Also, if you're naming the purest FPS you musn't forget Quake, which is one of the best FPS games out there, in my opinion, at least.

Man, as a kid I could take on the godlike bots. I'd really get in the zone, where time moved fast and slow at the same time and my reactions were perfect. I'm waaaay too rusty for that now.

I never said I prefer being solitary. As I mentioned LAN gaming is great fun as well. I merely ventured that the solitary experience can also be very social, team oriented, engaging and in some ways an even truer form of gaming. In the solitary form there is no drunken laughing at your friends, getting up and talking to your friends about something in game or out of game... or general foolishness... there is only the game. Pure and simple. But don't mistake me for preferring one over another.

@Commodore4Life, LAN parties and gaming in a group is nice, but thats not only aspect of gaming that is important. Gaming on your own or playing MP but over the net are also incredibly experiences and draw you much deeper into the game because all interactions are a part of the game, in the game world (chatting, voice, etc.) so I think this modern era of games is actually quite great and dare I say even superior in many ways to the experiences of old that you refer to. But, lans are still cool.

There used to be a time when i went into a server of UT and got completely annihilated, but nowadays i get on a server and do relatively fine, even without much practice :(
