The band's rap-rock hybrid style was influential on several groups, such as Rage Against the Machine and a late 1980's tour with the Beastie Boys was what convinced the latter group to return performing their own instruments. UDS' single "Deeper Shade of Soul" was a hit in the United States, peaking at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Urban Dance Squad Lyrics

Not to be down with
Count me in
Not to be down with
Lizards' tongues licking, everything is pivoting
To be on top
Ready to scheme up
From every crack and seam
Devils team up
Got to get the fabric, got to get the fabric
I want in
Not to be down with
Lizards' tongues licking, everything is pivoting
To be on top
Got to get the fabric, got to get the fabric
I want in
Not to be down with
I know it's a sin
When my big frown hits
Got to get the fabric, got to get the fabric
Lizards' tongues licking, everything is pivoting
To be on top
Here's the man who stands on the outside
Inside looking
Here's the man standing on the outside
Inside looking, what you've been cooking up
Want to be the man who shakes with his
Right hand, stabs with the left hand
In two seconds flat
The lyrics to Urban Dance Squad's song Inside are all about being on top and making sure that you're not left behind. The song speaks to the power dynamic that exists within society, with everyone vying for their place at the top. The use of lizards' tongues licking to describe this process adds a layer of animalistic savagery to the lyrics, emphasizing the cutthroat nature of competition. The singer is eager to be part of this process, wanting in and not wanting to be left behind.
The reference to Constantine is likely a nod to the Roman Emperor of the early 4th century who was known for his political cunning and ability to scheme his way to the top. The singer is adopting that mindset, recognizing that you need to be ruthless and strategic in order to get ahead. The line about devils teaming up suggests that the singer is also aware of the darker, more nefarious side of this process.
Ultimately, the song is about the desire to be part of the inner circle, to be on top and in control. The repetition of the line "got to get the fabric" reinforces this idea - the singer is willing to do whatever it takes to be part of the game.

Not if you ask the guys of Rage Against the Machine or The Beastie boys. RATM was founded when Zach and Tom saw the UDS live. And touring with the UDS as their opening act inspired the Beastie Boys to pick up their instruments and record " Check yo head" and thanked the UDS in the liner notes. The UDS returned the compliment in their song "Demagogue" where Rude boy raps "I got the means to check yo head, like the Beastie Boys."

@Lee Dee I do not consider UDS anywhere near the crap that “nu-metal” is.
Lee Dee
Yes. Very true. Too bad this scene/style of music was hijacked by “nu metal” bands later on and destroyed the potential of this genre. UDS are definitely pioneers and did it the best from the get go. 😎

@Channing webster playing thru a whammy pedal is innovative? Tres Manos can play circles around Tom Morello.
The grunge movement was about angst? I thought it was about heroine.Rick Beato has a video about the producer that recorded RATM and how the drums weren’t cutting thru the mix. So they used replacement drums on their albums. Snare kick and hi hat. So what you think is him being so heavy footed is just samples of better drums. They set them up as triggers for live performances.
RATM is the most boring and predictable band of all time.
Channing webster
@Travis Difference being Rage had the heaviest footed drummer in Rock, the most innovative lead guitarist, and a front man who carried around enough angst and fury to power ten grunge movements.
