Married in a Gold Rush
Vampire Weekend Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the government's to blame
We got married in a gold rush
And the rush has never felt the same
Shared a moment in a cafe
Shared a kiss in pouring rain
We got married in a gold rush
I don't wanna hear the rumors, please don't say it loud
I just wanna go out tonight and make my baby proud
Boy, who's your baby?
Girl, if you don't know by now
There's two seats on the midnight train
The gold won't weigh us down
Hanging gardens turned to desert
All that loving turn into hate
We got married in a gold rush
And those wedding bells were ringing out our fate
I don't wanna hear the rumors, please don't say it loud
I just wanna go out tonight and make my baby proud
Boy, who's your baby?
Girl, if you don't know by now
There's two seats on the midnight train
The gold won't weigh us down
The rush is on to somewhere else, we're running out of time
Everything was ours, now it's just an empty mine
Animals don't understand the words on the danger sign
For them, it's just some shade from the morning shine
I thought you might learn the language
I thought you might learn to sing
We were born before the gold rush
So why can't I remember anything?
I want to put things back together
I wanna give, don't wanna take
Time to disavow the gold rush
And the bitterness that's flourished in its wake
I don't wanna hear the rumors, please don't say it loud
Please don't say it loud
I just wanna go out tonight and make my baby proud
Boy, who's your baby?
Girl, if you don't know by now
There's two seats on the midnight train
The gold won't weigh us down
I don't wanna hear the rumors, please don't say it loud
Please don't say it loud
I just wanna go out tonight and make my baby proud
Boy, who's your baby?
Girl, if you don't know by now
There's two seats on the midnight train
The gold won't weigh us down
The song "Married in a Gold Rush" by Vampire Weekend expresses the disillusionment with contemporary society and the consequences of the exploitation of natural resources. The lyrics suggest that something is happening in the country, and the government is to blame for the current situation. The singer of the song got married in a gold rush, and ever since then, everything has changed. The shared moments of love and happiness turned into pain, emptiness, and bitterness, as the sight of gold continues to haunt the singer.
The lyrics also touch upon the idea of rumors and prejudices. The singer doesn't want to hear any rumors and just wants to go out with their partner and make them proud. The chorus repeats the question of who your baby is, suggesting that relationships and love are not bound by gender roles or societal norms. The song ends with a call for change, to disavow the gold rush and its aftermath, and to give rather than take.
Line by Line Meaning
Something's happening in the country
There's turmoil in society
And the government's to blame
The authorities are responsible
We got married in a gold rush
We got swept up in a frenzy of materialism
And the rush has never felt the same
And the excitement has faded
Shared a moment in a cafe
Spent time together in a coffee shop
Shared a kiss in pouring rain
Kissed in a heavy downpour
And the sight of gold will always bring me pain
The idea of wealth now makes me feel upset
Hanging gardens turned to desert
Once-beautiful things have become barren
All that loving turn into hate
Previously strong affection has become animosity
And those wedding bells were ringing out our fate
The marriage was doomed from the start
The rush is on to somewhere else, we're running out of time
People are moving towards the next big thing, hurrying before opportunities vanish
Everything was ours, now it's just an empty mine
Everything we had is now worthless
For them, it's just some shade from the morning shine
To animals, their surroundings (including the mine) is just shelter
So why can't I remember anything?
Why can't I recapture the past?
Time to disavow the gold rush
It's time to reject the greedy, greedy culture
And the bitterness that's flourished in its wake
And the resentment that followed
Please don't say it loud
Please don't spread rumors
There's two seats on the midnight train
We can escape together
The gold won't weigh us down
We won't be weighed down by money
