Morning
Van Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From the window of a train
The autumn colour
That reflect upon the open evening sky
I'm traveling north
To go and find a lover
With a morning star in my heart

Will this only last a season?
Or is there more than meets the eye?
Well, I spend my whole life searching
With a promise and a smile
Was just a lie

A farmer tills his land with ancient wisdom
The power of the seed
The harvest moon
And the waiting for the rains
Can seem a lifetime
Test your faith when all the rivers
Have run dry

You can drown yourself in wine
Of bitter wonder
Or search for answers in the sky
You can drop your guard
And let in all the demons
With the beauty of her face
The sweet disguise

You return to southern lands
Empty handed
Where every leaf on every tree
Had fallen down
And the wind that blows from all those snow capped mountains
So frikkin' cold that it grips your
Weary soul

I have a feeling you are waiting
At some station far beyond
In a place that knows no saddened boundaries

With a morning star
In your heart

Overall Meaning

In the first paragraph, the lyrics describe the singer looking out of a train window and observing the beautiful autumn colors reflecting against the evening sky. They mention that the singer is traveling north, possibly implying a journey to find love. The phrase "morning star in my heart" suggests that the singer is hopeful and optimistic about finding love.

The second paragraph explores the uncertainty and doubts that come with searching for love. The lyrics question whether this quest for love will be temporary or if there is something deeper hiding beneath the surface. The line about spending a whole life searching with a promise and a smile that turns out to be a lie reflects the disappointment and disillusionment the singer may have experienced in their past relationships.

Moving on to the third paragraph, the lyrics shift to a metaphor of a farmer and the wisdom he possesses in tilling his land. The power of the seed and the waiting for the rains symbolize patience and faith in the face of challenges. The reference to all the rivers running dry indicates a time when everything seems to be against you, testing your faith. It suggests that even in difficult times, one can find strength by holding onto their beliefs.

In the final paragraph, the lyrics address the different ways one can choose to cope with the uncertainties and challenges of life. The mention of drowning in wine or searching for answers in the sky portrays two extremes of escapism. The singer warns against letting down one's guard and succumbing to negative influences, even if they come disguised as beauty. The last few lines express a sense of longing for someone or something that seems to be in a place that transcends sadness and limitations, possibly indicating a hope for a love that knows no boundaries.

Overall, these lyrics delve into the themes of love, uncertainty, faith, and the different ways we can navigate life's challenges and disappointments.

The key to a great life is taking the time out to enjoy and notice the simple things around us. Don't let it pass you by...I'm 50 and going through pancreatic cancer literally on borrowed time. I wish someone had told me to just stop and enjoy things in my 20s. So I'm telling you all. Enjoy every day. Stay in the now.
