Known as "Van the Man" by his fans, Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, writing their 1964 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career, starting with the album Astral Weeks.
Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Domino", and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul," and Morrison rejects the characterization of his genre of music as Rock, citing Elvis Presley as a non-influence.
He continues to perform regularly and achieved his highest U.S. chart position (number ten on the Billboard 200) with his 2008 album, Keep It Simple.
Cul de Sac

I look down
Be less sure, sir
And take your rest
It's been much too long
Since we drifted in song
Lay it down wet
Oh I traveled far
To the nearest star
And met Palomar, mar, mar
And we don't care just who you know
It's who you are
And when they all go home
Down the cobblestones
You can double back (spoken "This is it")
To a cul de sac
Mmm
Oh, I traveled far
The nearest star
And Mount Palomar, Palomar, Palomar, Palomar
And we don't care just who d'you know who d'you know
And who you really are, really are
And when they all,
All go home
Down the cobblestones
You will double back
To a cul de sac
You know, you know you will
You will, oh, will double back
And not very far
To a cul de sac
You, you, you, will double back
To a cul de sac
You know, you know it's not very far away
No, no
It's just a cul de sac
And you know, and you know, and you know, it's not very very far away,
No
It's just a cul de sac
Donn, donn, donn
You're not very far away, no oh
It's not, it's not very far away
It's not as far as a country mile
(You got it)
It's just a cul de sac
The lyrics of Van Morrison's song Cul de Sac are somewhat mysterious and full of imagery. The cul de sac is a symbol of a dead end, a place of no escape. The smoothness of the road has an almost hypnotic effect, luring the listener into a state of calmness. The singer is telling the listener to be less sure and take a rest, implying that they have been going too fast for too long, and it is time to slow down and take a breather. The use of the word "sir" adds a layer of formality to the lyrics, suggesting that the song is about a serious matter.
The second verse of the song talks about traveling to the nearest star and meeting Palomar. Palomar is a reference to the Palomar Observatory in California, known for its large telescope that has made many discoveries in astronomy. The line "and we don't care just who you know, it's who you are" suggests that the singer is not interested in superficial connections or celebrity status, but rather in who a person truly is. The final stanza repeats the idea of doubling back to the cul de sac, which suggests a sense of being trapped or stuck, unable to move forward.
Overall, the song Cul de Sac is a contemplation of the limits of human existence and the choices we make in life. It is a reminder to slow down and reflect on our journey, and to appreciate the beauty of the present moment.

This is one of the last albums of VMâs I heard, what a gem Iâd been missing out on for years. Cul De Sac blew me away. My gosh he put out 5-6+ albums in about a 4 year period that are all Pure Gold/Platnium records.
