Johnny recorded as a member of the 1980's southern rock band The Johnny Van Zant Band which released albums in 1980, 1981 and 1982. The band shortened its name to Van Zant for the release of its fourth album in 1985, the eponymous Van Zant, which saw some chart success with "You've Got to Believe in Love" and "I'm a Fighter". However, this band was not the same as the current version of Van Zant and did not include brother Donnie.
Johnny released another album under his full name in 1990, but spent most of his time in that period singing for the Lynyrd Skynyrd reunion group. He joined up with Donnie, and they revived the Van Zant name to release an album in 1998, which led to a follow up album in 2001. They have also released two albums to the country music format: 2005's Get Right with the Man and 2007's My Kind of Country. Overall, the group has had two singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks charts (the prior incarnation of Van Zant also had two), and six on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

Let me tell ya baby!
You've got me in a mood
So take me to your school
Say bye-bye to the rules
Bye-bye baby
Your body's givin' me
Too much for my eyes to see
I want a taste of what I need
So baby let's take the night
Somewhere it feels so right
Ain't no other color that will do
Baby get blue
(get blue)
(get blue)
(baby)
Don't water down my dream
I'll tell you just what I think
I think that you know the time is now
The lights keep spinin' red
You get inside my head
In a way I can't forget
So baby let's take the night
Somewhere it feels so right
Ain't no other color that will do
Baby let's take the night
Somewhere it feels so right
There's a place that waits for me and you
Baby get blue
Oh get blue baby!
Guitar!
Woo!
So baby let's take the night
Somewhere it feels so right
Ain't no other color that will do
So baby let's take the night
You make me feel so right
There's a place that waits for me and you
Baby get blue
(get blue)
(get blue)
(baby)
(get blue)
(get blue)
(baby)
Baby get blue!
Woo!
Baby get blue!
Ba-ba-baby
Ba-ba-baby
Ba-ba-baby
Ba-ba-baby
Baby get blue!
Van Zant's song "Baby Get Blue" is a classic rock and roll song about pure unbridled desire. The lyrics describe the singer's desire to be with someone they find attractive and their willingness to throw caution to the wind in pursuit of that person. The song begins with the singer expressing their desire and mood, urging their love interest to take them to their school while they say "bye-bye to the rules." The singer is enthralled by the love interest's beauty; they describe their body as too much for their eyes to see and express a need for a taste of what they have.
The singer describes their dream, which they instruct their love interest not to water down. The lights of the night seem to add to the allure, the red lights spinning and getting inside their head in a way they cannot forget. The song builds to a crescendo as the singer continues to urge their love interest to take the night somewhere it feels so right, expressing the belief that "ain't no other color that will do." The song ends with the singer repeating the title, "Baby get blue," emphasizing their desire and willingness to take risks in pursuit of pleasure.
Overall, "Baby Get Blue" is a quintessential rock and roll song about pure desire, complete with catchy riffs, powerful vocals, and lyrics that leave little to the imagination. The song uses imagery and euphemisms to express the singer's desire and willingness to do whatever it takes to be with their love interest.
