Overall Meaning

The song "The Reason" by Hoobastank is a powerful and emotional ballad about a person's struggle to find their own identity and place in the world. From the opening lines, the singer expresses his hopelessness and feelings of being lost: "I'm not a perfect person/There are many things I wish I didn't do." @ADHDgrapher We're curious if BAR could be the straw that breaks the camel's back. We unfortunately cannot demand Apple to enable support for modern OpenGL. If they did, that would be awesome. For now, and maybe for eternity, we could slightly advice to get that gaming PC after all... But only if you can afford it! Please let us know if you did manage to get to play BAR!

One interesting mechanic different from Supreme Commander, Total Annihilation or any other similar game I know of is that in BAR, flanking damage is a thing. The first time a unit's hit, it sets a narrow cone facing the point it got shot from, and then shots from any angle other than that cone will deal proportionally more damage as the angle approaches 180 degrees, up to double damage from the 'rear.' So, even common 'infantry' bots can inflict staggering damage if they get zergling-style surrounds on enemies. Advancing into defense turrets that shoot you from two sides at once is asking to get torn apart. This flanking 'cone' will reset after a few seconds of not getting shot. You can turn on an option to show this cone and a circle that shows relative damage angles.

@Nkt Slp I've played 1500ish teamgames in faf, over the last 2-3 years the've reduced cpu load and gpu by around 10-30%, as long as everyone in the lobby as a good cpu score, this doen't happen that often. Only in long ass seton's games where you end up with 2000 asf's per player :D

Zero-K is another good one and is in fact a fork of the same project as BAR. They've gone in different directions since then but both are well worth playing. Zero-K is free on Steam. Those who want more can play the Spring engine games which are also free. Balanced Annihilation (the project BAR/Zero-K split from) is a popular one. Then you have the SupCom games, Planetary Annihilation, and of course the original Total Annihilation that started it all. TA has had an active modding scene for about 25 years now so there are plenty of worthwhile projects I've skipped plus more I've forgotten or never knew about. But the original game, properly patched, does run just fine on modern systems so you can try it vanilla or with some of the early mods like Absolute Annihilation.

Still got my original Total Annihilation box in basement, that game was amazing: according to your RAM (up to 64MB!!!) the maps became bigger, partially so big you had to have outposts for your robots.
Supreme Commander (2), in my opinion, is a bit too "short", small and the maps are rly not good at all :( I am still trying to build huge bases with artillery and bäm, game is over...

@T Bone spring did run on Mac, but Apple made things progressively harder by not updating their open source GLX support and BAR devs had to drop support for MAC. It would be holding back all these cool visuals and lighting. I run Linux, and am stuck on Apple for work. I know there are ways to run Linux on Apple hardware. It's just not as good for games now.

@T Bone It's an open-source game. If mac devs are interested into forking it and making it work, they can. But given that the Spring (the game engine they use) community has been working on porting a 1.X version to MacOS for few year now, I guess the process is difficult.

SC2 focuses on execution at the micro level, this seems to fit into that lovely "execution at the tactics level". Definitely interested in this one. If the game is fun and stable, UX / menu tweaks are a straightforward thing to add the final polish.

Totally important and I don't know if anyone who knows the game is on stream when you're playing it or not
The fight command is like attack-moving
It's got a massive amount of development behind it! AI For each bot/tank/airplane that makes the fight command at least a little smart
So something like a light bot is going to try to kite, and longer range things will try to keep at range. Amazing to use in formations <3

This does look fun. Watching this reminds me of an old Korean RTS called Jurassic War 2. They even had televised matches for it for a couple of years. I honestly thought it was pretty good. Too bad it's buried and forgotten completely. 😔 You could play as Dinos, Demons, Elves and Terrans 😂

Zero-k is a game very similar to BAR, same engine, same core features, but different weighting of those features and is worth checking out.
It feels more pollished imo, since its been around longer and the eco is more competetive
(efficency of infinite metal generation based on mex control, incentivises fighting for map even later on )

I loved Total Annihilation back in the late 90’s. It was my intro to RTS and I had a ton of fun rolling through the campaign until I eventually moved on to AoE.

Wow! Back in the 90's (still on my 20s) one of my dear friends ran a computer repair store. Every weekend a bunch of us would pack up our PCs and set up there for the weekend and play epic matches of TA and many other games. TA was the reason we worked our tails off to get ever-more powerful systems just to run its epic battles! I remember all of us oooh-ing and ahhh-ing when one of us got a 400mhz AMD processor and it FINALLY would run huge battles pretty smoothly. This is so amazing to see and brings back a flood of great memories.

So this happened to me and I realized that I was the one dragging. It is actually crazy how much you can scale up your eco and then because of that your army and implements. You aint done macroing until RAGNAROK BABY!!!!!! (That's the game winning, stupidly awesome, near full map range, rapid fire cannon lol).

I just got this game last night. Played a few 4v4 games and man I had a blast this game pays homage to all other great RTS games before it and does so in a deep and respectful way. It's a bit awkward getting the hang of your economy at the start but once you figure it out the game world is your oyster. Good luck have fun don't die.

50:33 when he said "he D gunned it" My heart skipped a beat. TA Was the best game on the planet. I remember when everything was going to shit, just max your production and send the commander in, your last ditch, hail mary, risk it all. If they killed it, it's okay because it was a nuke in waiting.

Great to see this video giving an overview of the game. I have just started playing it and am a bit overwhelmed. Some how-to videos would be good, showing good techniques to use. You used many key combinations in the video, so showing them a bit slower would help us beginners.

my gawd, TA and SupCom were great multiplayer games. (Never got into SupCom2 rly). And Planatary Anihilation was interesting too.
They always lacked in the campaign department tho. I had no idea BAR was in development. This is awesome 😀

I built my first computer in 1997 in order to play Total Annihilation when it first came out. You should do a little research on TA and how groundbreaking it was if you have the time - I believe it was even the first game to have DLC. Chris Taylor went on to develop Supreme Commander in 2007, the spiritual successesor to Total Annihilation. I never understood how Starcraft did better than TA when it came out in 1998.

(sorry for my ENG) my biggest problem with these grand scale RTS games is very early on the game, we start using almost the maximum zoom levels (the most effecient way to play) so we miss the details on units.. not like in SC2.. your intro is the best example for this.. i had no idea whats going on except some nuke explosions and the biggest units moving middle... little icons pwe-pwe each other.. just like EVE online.. when you watch some of grand scale PVP battle when somebody is streaming you can only see icons and circles

Yes that's what grand scale means.... Unlike in sc2 where the player switches the screen every second and only see a fraction of the fight, which is a nightmare for any new player btw. At least here someone can see exactly what's happening 🤣

We had to set a limit to the number of users to save the servers from crashing, we are incrementally increasing it now. Winter has been a big contributor to that issue indeed :p

For a game with so much happening im so shocked that my pc with a 1660 super can handle quite a fair amount of carnage. Start the match at 220 fps but by the end game I'm pulling around 20 to 30 in intense situations(I stress tested the game by having an 8v8 AI BARb game with all of them cheating and it was ridiculous)

I just downloaded the game and I'm excited to give it a shot! Something I've been thinking of a lot lately is why Starcraft feels so special compared to a lot of other games and I boil it down to two things:
1. The characters and campaign missions make you connect with the units. Each unit also has some soul and personality to them (like when you select them they say voicelines)
2. There is a rich history around starcraft with things like StarCrafts (the carbot series) that makes even the scary, gross Zerg adorable, attractive, and hilarious.
In addition to SC2's killer gameplay offerings, all that heart and soul behind the game makes people like me still love it to this day even though it's such a tough game to play (hardest in the world IMO). It's sad to see what is probably the death of pro SC2 happening before our eyes, but it's nice Winter is keeping an eye on the RTS landscape for us.

I wonder if this game will bring the multi-minitor support supcom had. Every RTS should have it, but to date only Supcom has ever done something as innovative.

I don't know why people always overlook Planetary Annihilation, which is easily the best RTS in the genre, IMO. Incredibly sophisticated and effective controls, Land, Sea, Air, and Orbital layers, multiple planets, moons you can crash into planets... it's the full package.
But BAR has one-upped them on controls, which is really saying something! But I miss that orbital layer. PA has spoiled me.

Battle for Middle Earth and its sequel are easily the best RTS I've ever played. Age of the Ring, a mod for the second game's expansion, just finished its last content update and has only made it greater. Truly a masterpiece if anyone is looking for an RTS to play.

This looks very very similar to Planetary Annihilation. Hopefully they cleared up some of the issue with AI massing like 400+ unit and lagging out games.

Commanders D-gun one shot anything.

Tho the commander doesn't have that many hp. A sneak attack with a few suicide bombs can end a game ;)

Winter, although I can feel how you are excited for this game, your presentation could have been so much better.
My main takeaway is that there is a myriad of features, and control details (which not necessarily must be a good thing), but I learned very little about the strategic and tactical aspect of the game.

Yeeees bro BAR is so good. The discord is super positive, there's plenty of little intuitive mechanics, you're rewarded for aggression and map control while also having access to cost effective raid resistant defensive buildings

I'll pick these kinds of rts over star-craft or the "new" command and conquer (or even supreme commander 2) any day. Gives me supreme commander vibes, and that is a good thing.
