The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.

Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.

Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.

Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.

Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Steve Martin was by far my favorite client when I worked at McKee Gallery. He is nothing like you'd expect if what you go on is what you see on screen, he is shy, retiring , somewhat serious, and even more intelligent than you see here. The humor is still there but it's not a "performance" type of humor. It is so like him to pick these artists to feature and that is why I liked him coming in because unlike many high end collectors he is not a "trophy hunter" he really does care about art and he knows painting better than any art historian or art critic I've ever met although he would not think so.

Seeing works in person makes a huge difference. I had a number of art history courses in college and had formed an idea of what Jackson Pollock's paintings were about from the small reproductions of them in art history books. Then, I saw a number of them in person and the physical size and depth created by the intricate layers of paint gave a three dimensional quality with an impression of enormous weight that the two dimensional, flattened perspective of a photograph could not convey. The same thing happened when seeing "Guernica." I think I stood in front of it for at least two hours simply overwhelmed by the work. I had no idea, from the photographs, that Gainsborough's "The Blue Boy" was nearly six feet tall and four feet wide - it was a life size (or larger) portrait. You really can't understand a lot of art unless you are lucky enough to see it with your own eyes.

I think what Steve Martin mentioned briefly is actually a very fun exercise. Next time you have a moment, go to a museum or a gallery and sit in front of a painting for at least an hour. Just one painting. Look at this painting and see how much this painting changes over time, the more you study it. Discover the strokes of the artist. Look for the colors, shapes and the story that emerges from this piece. :)

These are 2 very beautiful paintings....and I am not overly partial to pure abstraction. As he was getting into his revelation, I thought of poetry vs. prose. Representative paintings are prosaic - they tell you something outright and you take it from there. These are like visual poems, they convey feeling and elicit emotions in that way and the viewer goes on to completion in a much more personal way.

Love Steve Martin! Not only because his films are great, but also- he is so different than his roles would have you believe. He seems very inquisitive and sensitive, which make for an excellent actor, and a very interesting person in general. I especially appreciate his evident enthusiasm for art.

Living among artists ( actors, comedians musicians, writers, painters...) in southern California I can assure you that actors are typically nothing like the characters they play.

Characters have defined borders on what they can and cannot do and still be that particular character.

Well known actors/celebrities have marketed and cultivated images. Which are highly polished characters, not the real person.

Abstract art can be beautiful and nice to look at without having any meaning behind it. You just enjoy composition, harmony of colors and shapes. Abstract painting can be as beautiful as flower or mountains, which were created by random forces of nature, which we humans just happen to find beautiful to look at. I have found that many people are very narrow minded toward art, demanding that art should always represent something. To me, my criteria is that if I like to look at it, then I like it. Regardless what kind of art it is, abstract, realism, doesn't matter.

What Steve Martin (one of my favorite public humans) is describing (that is, art revealing itself) has less to do with art than with the process of true seeing. Art is a more attractive object for engagement (in truly looking and opening to the process of seeing). But one can experience the same changes looking at a stone, or a sock. This type of abstract post-modernist art coming from that time period in France makes so much sense when you know what was going on in history and the French intellectuals. To me, this is a philosophical expression using artistic techniques.

Abstract art is so very much more.
It is a view into the boundless world of everything non-physical, as well as at all physical things transformed into the abstract world;
their meaning, their relationship, their patterns...
Abstract art encompasses that which can not be expressed by mere words, it goes beyond.

Allow yourself to open up to the (abstract) artwork, and you will enter a new world.
(though sometimes it helps to read about the artist and her intentions beforehand, e.g. think of Rauschenberg's White Painting )

He's right in that given time to observe, even an abstract piece of art starts revealing meanings to the viewer but that's simply because that's what the brain does - it interprets the data and prepares for the future. That's how pareidolia works. As an artist myself, I argue that looking at abstract art and trying (or, at least not resisting) to identify it with what one has deposit over the years in his/her memory is totally missing the point. If abstract art teaches us anything, I'm convinced, that is that there is beauty within the structures beyond the macro-world where we have formed and long exercised ideas about reality. And not that beauty is what we should be seeking necessarily, but maybe knowledge. Let abstract art evade us from the paradigms.

I was blown away by Abstract Expressionism and the New York School in the early 60s, while working at LACMA as a museum helper.

Steve Martin is an intelligent, cultured, and fundamentally serious person (in addition to being a "wild and crazy guy" on-screen), and the several friends of mine who have met him (I haven't) say he's kind and considerate... a perfect gentleman. His love of art is genuine: not only does he collect, but he works his love of art into his films, most notably "Shop girl." I saw a show of Canadian painters he curated at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts several years ago. That being said, I simply must object to his statements that you can understand and appreciate art fundamentally without "studying the ISMs," and by implication all the context and art history surrounding a work. You may get some enjoyment, and even personal insight, but great art is so much more than that. Consider the case at hand: "Creavit Deus Hominem (Synchromy Number 3: Color counterpoint)." The artist Morgan Russell used that title ("God created man") for a reason and if that kind of context isn't part of your understanding and perception, your limited understanding may satisfy you, but ultimately will be shallower than it could be. True, great art admits a wide range of interpretations, but not all interpretations are equally valid nor equally insightful nor equally illuminating. For instance, knowing this title (and a bit about the life and "isms" of Russell), you may be more likely to see in the fundamentally abstract painting hints of a human figures. I'm not saying this is the "correct" interpretation of this work, but what I AM saying is that understanding the background, history, "isms," and such may lead you to see new things, craft new AND BETTER interpretations. My own understand and appreciation of works is almost in direct proportion to the amount I know and understand about the artist, his/her goals, andy es the "ISMs." My excellent college courses in art history opened my mind and eye in a way that even prolonged and close visual inspection of works (which of course is essential). Such context will also help link any particular work to other works—connections that might not have been evident without such knowledge. The proper response to the extreme version of the "I just let the art speak to me... damn the 'isms'" (an extreme I don't ascribe to Mr. Martin) comes from my favorite popular writer on art history, Robert Hughes. He said: "Whenever someone tells me they don't know much about art but they know what they like, I reply: 'If you don't know much about art who CARES what you like?'"

When I look at a painting, I simply see what is there and then try to discern the meaning the artist intended to communicate rather than try to come up with my own meaning and interpretation. In one, I saw a jumble of shapes of different colors that also formed lines that ran across the canvas in a heap of chaos. In the other I see some shapes put together in an intentional way to create curves and lines on a black background with a multicolored mass of lumps in the lower left corner. What the artist is probably trying to do is leave their paintings completely open to interpretation with no real intended meaning on their own part.

I agree with him about the small painting as intellectual and made of component parts.

The artist's Modernist dilemma is when to cash out playing the pictorial 'Rubik cube' and leave it for another work, if any psychology can muddy the spatial IQ.

The other, everything has pictorial value as architectonic representation so there's natural pictorial associations with the perceived external world.

The pictures however don't have the oomph to make them Modern Masterworks in terms of the oomph of the aesthetic power of Picasso, for example.

Steve Martin is too modest to try to introduce himself to a British audience, and too complicated to be able to be defined by others. What I can say about him, is that he is a real person - who is able (as an actor) to become another person so well that you totally believe that is him. He is a comedian, he does stand up comedy, he does comedy in film and he is amazing in improvisation. He is a musician - he plays the piano and banjo brilliantly, has his own band, has recorded, performed gigs at small and large venues and done tours. His ability with art can be seen in this video, so i will move on. He has a brilliant mind. He is an author, a playwright, and a producer. And here is the thing that connects all these different pieces of him: in each of these his involvement, performance, whatever is at a level with the best. Heis a very modern Renaissance man.

Sometimes the artists intentionally put some subliminal parts in there that get picked up by some people their subconscious minds which is always rewarding to see.
I'm not a fan of artists that paint random noise (the mind will always find patterns, that's just how it works) and call it "abstract". Anyone can throw random shapes and colors on a canvas... Those "artists" are the reason why modern art's reputation is going down the drain. Its getting flooded with fast-food garbage. There needs to be a hint of creative smart/cleverness in there for it to deserve to get the "art" label/tag.

I really do like the piece on the left… And imagine the time it was done… People back then was so shocked to see something that wasn’t more “traditional“… But now something like that is typical modern/contemporary… And it’s a good thing… Painting periods and styles should not have to be edited by galleries, art historians etc.… We artists should make the decision on whether or not something is still valid or not… And besides no art looks exactly the same even if it is stylistically the same… I was refused to show in Los Angeles because my paintings were similar to de Kooning.. but it was just one piece, my other works were totally different… Because I’m not an artist that continues to repeat themselves over and over in a slightly different way… I can’t do that, I’ve never been able to do that, and I can’t stand that Gallery’s ask Artists to continue doing the same thing over and over so they are recognizable… How can they possibly grow or evolve? It doesn’t make any sense. That’s why I really respect artist like Picasso and Matisse, and all the artists that have changed throughout their careers… Being static and doing the same thing repetitively and just a slightly different way or slightly different color doesn’t mean anything, we’re not evolving we’re not learning we’re not growing it’s just frustrating but that’s the Gallery system… And it needs to change!!!!!!

That larger painting actually has a lot of technical skill with blending hues and values and the color theory. The smaller one has more of a composition. I like them, I think the smaller one looks like a face.

My first impression of the larger painting , “Synchromy” is that it is a painting of a woman with her hand draped forward. Also if you look at one of his other paintings, “Synchromy in Green and Orange” that one is clearly of a nude male figure. Beautiful painting.

Thank you Steve… I practically don’t care about theories either… I don’t care about the art movements or anything… What we’re doing is creating images, some beautiful, some not so beautiful… Because we live in a modern age we don’t have to paint to capture the image of a person like photography… In the modern era we can just paint to Xpress ourselves however we feel and hopefully do it with some skill… So thank you Steve for saying that… But it doesn’t really matter it’s what you look at how it makes you feel the colors, the composition etc. and I really hate these pseudo-intellectual is trying to make it so much more complicated than it is… Trying to sound smart, trying to come up with a theory or reason or movement… It’s so unnecessary… It’s just art, it’s some thing that is great that human beings can do like music, like literature, like filmmaking even… Painting, the best of all, is more valuable than gold… And that to me is amazing because it is something that is done with the human hand not a computer with artificial intelligence… That is not art.

Abstract art is a practiced artist exploring qualities of light, form, color, etc. It’s not for amateurs. Theories are what artists go along with because it makes gallery owners and reviewers happy. Sometimes we write crazy parodies of gallery tags and are shocked when they take the things seriously and actually hang them. 😳

The state of freedom from habits is possible only when we allow us to reject all limitations. Compmaturism, a new direction in art

Clear evidence that ( in abstract art as well as in life 'out there" ) we create what we perceive. It is not just hanging around out there somewhere to be perceived. Artists have known this all along - tens of thousands of years minimum and Kandinsky more recently. Abstract art starts at the beginning of this knowing without having to drag one along through the object represented from somewhere else. If Martin keeps this up then he might someday actually ask himself: " Hmmmmm....I wonder who it is that knows about all these things I see in this picture..... and where are they really .... anyway? All power to whatever people want to see, but I think it's generally a mistake to try to reduce abstraction to "standing for something not abstract." I think this stuff is just about the elements of painting, period: shape, color, line, shading -- and the interaction among them. It's art: it's designed to engender an emotional or intellectual reaction and was presumably an expression of the same. It just can't be nailed down to "how we see the world normally or naively." Whether you go for that or not is a matter of taste, of course -- probably more a matter of specific artwork (or should be).

It's your brain that changes. All throughout my life I've had one-off lenses through which I viewed the world, made up of moods in part, but another aspect that's impossible to describe other than calling it a filter, a feeling I have for periods of time. I understand “abstract art” to mean a work that simplifies to an extreme. that can go all the way to a blank minimalist point if the artist wishes to go there. But it started out as a “thing” and then became abstracted to a point. So it’s perfectly sensible to imagine what it might be, but not real important, because the artist abandoned the representational object and embraced to a degree the non-objective world of the unknown

The fact that a philosophy and psychology major, which Steve studied in College, see's elements and not theories applied should really speak volumes to us all. He is deluded however if he believes that Abstractions has only one possible interpretation even with multiple visits to view the same piece. Well versed painters in this genre will fool your senses into thinking that a particular thing is happening here. He is a brilliant man, and only teasing us with this video. He is Steve Martin. Steve Martin added depth to the painting. If make a show starring Steve Martin, in which he describes paintings. That would be an interesting show.

I like abstract works and simply think they “are what they are”. Some have more symmetry and vibrant colors which are appealing to me. Abstract art that has dingy, dark browns and dark golds have no lifting salts that give me pleasure and are not attractive like an ugly flower. Yes flowers can be ugly in this world, yet they have a purpose in the circle of ecology, but ugly colors in abstracts repel my attraction.

I think art is all bout the feeling the piece brings into you, it could be an inspiration, happiness, confusion, delight, sadness, joy, or some other feelings including those that can't be described by words, is not trying to find shapes, colors, or forms that remind you of something.
