Lenny Kravitz--American Woman

American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama let me be

Don't come hangin' round my door
I don't wanna see your face no more
I got more important things to do
Than spend my time growin' old with you

Now woman, stay away
American woman, listen when I say

American woman, get away from me
American woman, mama let me be

Don't come knockin' on my door
I don't wanna see your shadow no more
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes

Now woman, get away
American woman, listen when I say

American woman, I said get away
American woman, listen when I say

Don't come hangin' round my door
Don't wanna see your face no more
I don't need your warm machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes

Now woman, get away
American woman, listen when I say

American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama let me be

I gotta go,
I gotta get away
Babe, I gotta go
I wanna fly away

I'm gonna leave you woman
I'm gonna leave you woman
I'm gonna leave you woman
I'm gonna leave you woman

Bye, bye
Bye, bye
Bye, bye
Bye, bye

American woman
You're no good for me
And I'm no good for you
American woman
I'm looking at you right in the eye
Tell you what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna leave you woman
You know I gotta go
I'm gonna leave you woman
I gotta go
American woman
I gotta go

I gotta go
American woman, yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "American Woman" by Lenny Kravitz appear to be a conversation between a man and an American woman. With the repeated line "American woman, stay away from me..." it seems that the man is warning the woman to keep her distance because he wants their relationship to end. He asserts that he has better things to do than to be with her and doesn't need her "warm machines" or "ghetto scenes". The adage "colored lights can hypnotize, sparkle someone else's eyes" suggests that he finds her alluring but not the kind of partner he desires at the moment.

The song has been interpreted in different ways since its original release in 1970 by Canadian rock band The Guess Who. Some consider it a commentary on the Vietnam War and the anti-American sentiment of some Canadians at the time. Others believe that it is a reflection of the changing societal norms in North America, with the woman representing the conservative values of the past and the man longing for a more open and liberated society. Lenny Kravitz's version was released in 1999 for the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me movie soundtrack, and won a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance in 2000.

Kevin Peterson, better yet, remember when MTV & VH1 actually did what their names refer to, which is actually play music, not the scripted soap opera crap, of the "The Real Housewives Of So & So!"!? Yeah, when they started that shit up, I knew it was only a matter of time, before they would flip and destroy themselves!
