Reach out and touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who′s there
Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I′ll make you a believer

Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on your chest
You need to confess
I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there

Feeling unknown
And you′re alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the reciever
I′ll make you a believer

I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiever

Reach out and touch faith
Personal Jesus
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Overall Meaning

In Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus," the lyrics are centered around the idea of finding an individual in a position of authority or power and using that person as a way to feel emotionally or spiritually connected. The song speaks to the feeling of being alone or disconnected and searching for something to fill that void. The singer suggests that you should "take second best," meaning settle for something that isn't ideal, but will still fulfill your needs. This idea is reinforced with the line "things on your chest, you need to confess," which speaks to the idea that by opening up to another person, you can free yourself from the burden of keeping secrets or struggling alone.

Johnny Cash's cover of "Personal Jesus" is a bit different from the original Depeche Mode version. This version is much more stripped down and bare bones, with a slower tempo and a focus on Cash's deep and gravelly voice. The song takes on a more ominous tone as Cash's voice carries a sort of spiritual authority, giving the listener the feeling that they are indeed in the presence of a personal Jesus. The lyrics take on a much more literal meaning, with lines like "you can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice" and "take him by the hand and lead him through the land of your darkest dreams." Cash's version of "Personal Jesus" speaks to the idea of religion as a means of spiritual guidance and salvation.

Marilyn Manson's cover of "Personal Jesus" is perhaps the most controversial of the three. Manson's version is dark and brooding, with a heavy electronic sound and a focus on Manson's deep and menacing vocals. While Manson's version is still centered around the idea of finding a personal Jesus, his lyrics take on a more sinister tone. With lines like "take your hatred out on me, make your victim my head" and "you're gonna spread the infection, everyone's gonna die," Manson's version of the song speaks to the darker side of human nature and the idea of using religion as a means of manipulation and control.
