The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Crying In The rain
Various Artists Lyrics

The way my broken heart is hurtin' me
I've got my pride and I know how to hide
All my sorrow and pain
I'll do my cryin' in the rain
If I wait for cloudy skies
You won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes
Though the heartaches remain
I'll do my cryin' in the rain
Rain drops fallin' from Heaven
Could never wash away my misery
But since we're not together
I look for stormy weather
To hide these tears I hope you'll never see
Some day when my cryin's done
I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun
I may be a fool but till then, darling
You'll never see me complain
I'll do my cryin' in the rain
The lyrics to the song Crying In the Rain by Various Artists touch upon the emotional pain of a broken heart and the desire to hide it from the world. The first verse reveals the singer's determination to remain stoic and maintain a facade of pride even as their heart is breaking. They vow to never show their pain to their former lover, instead choosing to cry alone in the rain. The second verse emphasizes that the pain is still present even when the sun is shining, and the singer's love for their former partner remains despite the heartache.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the theme of hiding one's emotions, with the singer stating that they will cry in the rain so that their tears cannot be distinguished from the raindrops. The bridge suggests that while rain may be a natural way to wash away pain and sorrow, it cannot wash away the misery of a broken heart. The singer, however, still seeks out stormy weather to hide their tears and protect their pride. The final verse offers a note of hope, with the singer looking forward to a time when they can smile again and walk in the sun. Despite their heartache, they maintain a sense of optimism and the determination to carry on.
