The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

In the dead of the night
Although we both lie close together
We feel miles apart inside
Was it something I said or something I did
Did my words not come out right
Though I tried not to hurt you
But I guess that's why they say
[Chorus:]
Every rose has it's thorn
Just like every night has it's dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Every rose has it's thorn
Yeah it does
I listen to our favorite song
Playing on the radio
Hear the dj say loves a game of easy come and
Easy go
But I wonder does he know
Has he ever felt like this
And I know that you'd be here right now
If I could have let you know somehow
I guess
[Chorus]
Though it's been a while now
I can still feel so much pain
Like a knife that cuts you the wound heals
But the scar, that scar remains
I know I could have saved a love that night
If I'd known what to say
Instead of makin' love
We both made our separate ways
But now I hear you found somebody new
And that I never meant that much to you
To hear that tears me up inside
And to see you cuts me like a knife
I guess
[Chorus]
The song "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Various Artists talks about the pain and regrets that come with the end of a past relationship. The first verse suggests that even though two people may be physically close to each other, they can feel emotionally distant. The singer wonders if something they said or did caused the separation, but they admit to trying not to hurt their partner. The chorus follows the famous phrase "Every rose has its thorn," which means that even the most beautiful things have imperfections or downsides. The line "Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song" reinforces the notion that pain is a universal experience.
The second verse tells of the singer's longing for their past lover, listening to their favorite song on the radio, and hearing the DJ talking about love as a game. The singer wonders if the DJ really understands the depth of emotions that come with loving someone. They also express regret that they didn't communicate their love well enough to hold onto their relationship. The third verse reveals that the singer still feels pain after the breakup, but they acknowledge that although the wound has healed, the scars remain. They admit that they could have saved their relationship if they had known what to say, but they didn't, and they both went their separate ways. The final lines express the singer's pain at learning their ex-lover is with someone else, and how seeing them with someone else feels like a knife wound.

We both lie silently still
The two of us are lying beside each other in silence
In the dead of the night
During a very quiet and lonely night
Although we both lie close together
Even if we're physically close to each other
We feel miles apart inside
We're emotionally distant from each other
Was it something I said or something I did
I'm wondering if I did something wrong
Did my words not come out right
Maybe my words were not clear enough
Though I tried not to hurt you
Even though I didn't intend to hurt you
Though I tried
Even though I did my best
But I guess that's why they say
Perhaps that's what the saying means
Every rose has its thorn
Every beautiful thing has a downside
Just like every night has its dawn
Like how every bad time will eventually end
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Like how every person has a sad story to tell
Yeah it does
That's the truth
I listen to our favorite song
I'm listening to a song we both enjoy
Playing on the radio
Being played on a radio station
Hear the dj say loves a game of easy come and
The DJ is saying that love is unpredictable
Easy go
It can be gone in an instant
But I wonder does he know
I'm wondering if the DJ has experienced this
Has he ever felt like this
Has the DJ ever felt emotional pain?
And I know that you'd be here right now
I'm aware that you'd be with me at this moment
If I could have let you know somehow
If only I had communicated better
I guess
That's what I think
Though it's been a while now
Although it's been a long time since then
I can still feel so much pain
I still feel a lot of emotional pain
Like a knife that cuts you the wound heals
Like a wound caused by a sharp object, I am healing
But the scar, that scar remains
But the emotional damage has left a permanent mark
I know I could have saved a love that night
I believe I could have saved our love that night
If I'd known what to say
If only I had known the right words to say
Instead of makin' love
Instead of having physical intimacy
We both made our separate ways
We both went our separate paths
But now I hear you found somebody new
But now I've heard that you've found someone else
And that I never meant that much to you
And that I didn't hold as much significance for you
To hear that tears me up inside
Hearing that makes me feel extremely sad
And to see you cuts me like a knife
Seeing you with someone else hurts me deeply
I guess
I suppose
