The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Prรถfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

living free
season ticket on a one way ride
askin' nothing
leave me be
taking everything in my stride
don't need reason
don't need rhyme
going down
party time
my friends are gonna be there too
I'm on the highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
no stop sign
speed limit
nobody gonna slow us down
like a wheel
gonna spin it
nobody gonna mess me around
hey satan
payin' my dues
playing in a rocking band
hey mumma
just look at me
I'm on the way to the promised land
I'm on the highway to hell
on the highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
don't stop me
I'm on the highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
on the highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
and I'm goin' down
all the way, way down
I'm on the highway to hell
"Highway to Hell" is a classic rock song by Australian band, AC/DC. It was released in 1979 as a part of their album "Highway to Hell". The song is about the band's experience of touring and living the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. The lyrics of the song describe the band members' carefree attitude towards life, as they travel down the highway to perform their music. The opening lines - "Living easy, living free, season ticket on a one way ride" - depict the band's fearless approach to life as performers with nothing to lose.
The song has a strong rhythmic beat, with the lead guitar riffs complementing the energetic lyrics. The chorus - "I'm on the highway to hell" - has become synonymous with the rock 'n' roll lifestyle, with many bands adopting the phrase in their music. The second verse of the song mentions the devil, but it is not meant to be taken literally. It is a reference to the rebellious, non-conformist attitude of rock 'n' roll music.
Overall, "Highway to Hell" is a classic rock anthem that celebrates the carefree attitude of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. It is a tribute to the AC/DC's journey to fame as a rock band, and the underlying message is that if one wants to succeed in life, then one should be willing to take risks and live life on their own terms.
