When peace like a river attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
What ever my lot, Thou have taught me to say
"It is well, it is well with my soul"
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come
Let this blessed assurance control
That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate
And hath shed His own blood for my soul, yeah
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
My sin, oh the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, oh my soul
And Lord haste the day when my faith shall be sight
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll
The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend
Even so, it is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well, it is well, it is well
It is well, it is well, it is well

It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul

Overall Meaning

The song "It Is Well with My Soul" is a hymn of hope and peace in the midst of turmoil and challenge. The first verse compares the peace experienced by the believer to a river that flows gently, even as the sea is rocked by stormy waves. This peace is no mere human calm, but instead comes from the knowledge that "Christ hath regarded my helpless estate / And hath shed His own blood for my soul." The second verse describes the heartwarming assurance that sin, "not in part but the whole," has been wiped away and the redemption that results from that fact. The refrain repeats the beloved phrase, "It is well with my soul," expressing the core theme of the song. The final verse looks to the day when Christ returns and the believer's faith is fully realized, when "the clouds be rolled back as a scroll / The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend," and the promise of eternal life will be fulfilled.

Written by Horatio Spafford in 1873, the lyrics of "It Is Well with My Soul" were inspired by the author's own life experiences. Spafford was a wealthy businessman who lost much of his fortune in the Chicago Fire of 1871. Around the same time, he suffered the tragic loss of his son to scarlet fever. Not long after, he planned a trip to Europe for his family, but he was delayed due to work responsibilities. His wife and four daughters traveled ahead of him on the ship Ville du Havre. Tragically, the ship collided with another vessel and sank, with only his wife surviving. Upon hearing of his wife's safety, he traveled to be with her, and while passing over the area where their ship had sunk, he penned the words to this hymn, expressing his faith and trust in God even in the most difficult of circumstances.
