The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

This is a classic song that stopped me in my tracks.
In 2006 my dad was driving me and my brother to school and this played on WMBR 88.1. I think on a Wednesday.
it stopped us all in our tracks. I tried to scribble the words on one of my text books. I covered my text books with paper bags and stuff (everyone did in my high school) and I think I tried to write down the words so I'd remember it.
i remember getting to school and just remember and hearing what it was.
later I was so excited i went home and went on the WMBR archive to find out what it was.
We all got so into the Magnetic Fields because of that. My dad doesn't really like any music i do except the Magnetic Fields and the Cure and stuff.

Heard this at the end of one of the episodes of "The Shield" and it immediately grabbed me. I love great songwriters- Waits, Cave, MacGowan. This one is up there with the greats.

After having an abusive relationship, you think it's impossible to be loved again. After what was a happy little accident over picking up and returning a cute sweater to it's owner months after, I was in the throws of it again. I loved her a lot, but I knew that everything I did for her was extra. With a life hard all on it's own, telling her to close up again, I knew it wouldn't be long till all she would say was "You don't have to do that for me" and I knew it wouldn't matter what I did then. I had to let her go, I think I'm ready to get back into the world, and ready to hear this song without having a hard time.

The first time I heard these guys it was accidental too, they were playing maybe with another name too, but although there were other bands around playing still earlier techno, much fading into else (before everything went into a "new sound discovered" promoted massively with bands of back alley cats meowing/grunging their entitled Whiteness disappointments at slacking it from Seattle) in that late 80's sweet period of Peace, before the Crusades over the Middle East will start for the next decade/s...when I heard the Music these were doing, I realized that was something else of higher value than commercial labels promoters unfaithful waltzes with bands if pop in returns to invested pumping in their money schemes. This was, truly better crafted music as the Indie revolution ever made possible to be proud, not just knowing but enriching your life. After I returned to Boston, I was very relieved to find they finally had recorded some of their songs, so they could be around me wherever I went in the World. Not just a memory or dream of a short period of time
