The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Mambo No. 5
Various Artists Lyrics

This is mambo no. 5
One, two, three, four, five
Everybody in the car, come on, let's ride
To the liquor store 'round the corner
The boys say they want some gin and juice
But I really don't wanna
Beer bust like I had last week
I must stay deep because talk is cheap
I like Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita
And as they continue, you know they are looking sweeter
So what can I do? I beg you my Lord
To me flirting is just like sport
Anything'll fly, it's all good
Let me dump it, please set in the trumpet
A little bit of Mardi Gras in my life
A little bit of carnival, it's alright
A little bit of cellulite, if you please
A little bit of mambo is all I need
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary, all night long
A little bit of Jessica, here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man
Oh, we party down in the city
We gonna do New Orleans
[Incomprehensible]
Jump up and down
And move it all around
Shake your head to the sound
Put your hands on the ground
Take one step left and one step right
One to the front and one to the side
Clap your hand once, clap your hands twice
If it looks like this, then you are doing right
A little bit of Mardi Gras in my life
A little bit of carnival, makes it right
A little bit of cellulite, if you please
A little bit of mambo is all I need
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary, all night long
A little bit of Jessica, here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man
New Orleans
Home of the Mardi Gras
Yo, say what?
[Incomprehensible] roulet
A little bit of Mardi Gras in my life
A little bit of carnival, it's alright
A little bit of cellulite, if you please
A little bit of mambo is all I need
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary, all night long
A little bit of Jessica, here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man
I do all to fall in love
With a girl like you
You can't run, you can't hide
You and me, we gonna touch the sky
