Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep)
ft. Rosie (Julie Walters) & Tanya (Christine Baranski)

I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay
Ain't it sad
And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me
That's too bad
In my dreams I have a plan
If I got me a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work at all, I'd fool around and have a ball...

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world

Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world

A man like that is hard to find but I can't get him off my mind
Ain't it sad
And if he happens to be free I bet he wouldn't fancy me
That's too bad
So I must leave, I'll have to go
To Las Vegas or Monaco
And win a fortune in a game, my life will never be the same...

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world

Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world

Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world

It's a rich man's world

Overall Meaning

Donna Sheridan, Rosie and Tanya, collectively known as the Dynamos, perform the song "Money Money Money" in the musical film Mamma Mia! The song is essentially about the struggles of working-class life and the desire to escape from it, through the attainment of wealth. Donna begins the song by acknowledging her daily routine of working hard, day and night, just to pay her bills, but lamenting the fact that she has nothing left for herself. She dreams of a wealthy man who would care for her and provide her with the luxuries of life, so that she could "fool around and have a ball".

The refrain "Money, Money, Money” is sung repeatedly, emphasizing the value that money has in society, followed by the line that "money must be funny in the rich man's world", a subtle commentary on the absurdity of the fact that the wealthy have everything, even the amusement of watching those who struggle for basic needs. Donna's dream man is difficult to find, but she nonetheless feels compelled to seek him out. She imagines winning the fortune she needs in Las Vegas or Monte Carlo, acknowledging that if she was wealthy, her life would never be the same again.
