The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.

Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.

Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.

Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.

Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

My first moshpit was at Wacken last summer. I’m 46 years old and it was also my first time slipknot live show. What an experience! That was powerful af but so friendly at same time. Someone lost his balance and had to kiss the ground😅 the mass stopped immediately and we started the madness again in the moment he was on his feet again . Few songs later somebody lost his shoe and it stopped again just to find the shoe🤣 what a brotherhood! What a great experience! Never felt that way before. Just bam!

Totally [NOT] dangerous mosh pits. Metal heads look out for each other. Every time I've gone down in a mosh pit, the area around me was instantly cleared and like 5 people rush in to help me up. Raves on the other hand, now thats where the danger is. Everyone is too high on MDMA to realize someone has fallen, or they just don't care. A metal mosh pit (IMO) is one of the safest crowds to be in at a concert.

You’re right that we look out for each other. But dude, we only look out for each other if someone is very obviously experiencing fatigue, someone’s getting pushed around, or if they’ve fallen. I’ve been to a Brand Of Sacrifice concert- that pit was dangerous. People were slam dancing as if there was no one near them, throwing punches and kicks- it was fun, but also pretty dangerous. If you have a high potential to get very hurt, then it’s dangerous. Like with hardcore shows- you’re basically asking for punch to the face

I've been in 100s of thrash, death, black, punk, hardcore etc concerts (probably around a 1000) but I will never forget the Slayer pits. THAT was f@cking insane! Probably because in a Slayer concert you can find every type of fan, from punk, to hardcore, to death and thrash. ALL in one pit.

Yes these are crazy but when I was at Korn Woodstock 99, that was insane! It wasn’t a mosh pit. It was a sardine can of 10s of thousands moving in a wave. A rush of colliding emotions being scared of dying, excitement, adrenaline, exhaustion, chills of experiencing it, trying to jump to the music while trying not to fall n get crushed or hurt someone else. As I said it was so many emotions colliding at one time. No doubt these pits cause same effect. Crazy part is this was at a massive open field yet 10s of thousands pushed ahead which changed everything. When you can’t move while moving, it’s scary sht.

Yeah, these underground indoor ones where everyone is going crazy look hectic, but if something bad happens you can just go to the back and exit the crowd. The actually dangerous ones are the huge outdoor festivals with tens of thousands of people. Something bad happens there, you're stuck, and you just gotta survive. Example Pearl Jam at Roskilde and Limp Bizkit at BDO Sydney.

I was dragged into a moshpit at Wacken 2018 and it was the scariest shit I've ever lived through lmao. Someone pushed me into it and it's like my brain went into survival mode. I blacked out consciousness and only remembered to protect my face. I am way smaller than those guys. I obviously fell and grabbed onto some guy's quilt who noticed me and helped me. Once I was in a moshpit at an Architects and Parkway concert in Tilburg (NL). I was in the pit from beginning till end. It was absolutely massive. I lost both my shoes in that pit and my feet were bleeding. There was also a part where for some reason we all took another person on our shoulders and then continued the pit. Never have I felt more alive and happy. Everyone in that pit was my brother and I couldn't have felt safer despite my red feet

I'll never forget my first mosh pit, I was 16 in 2007, at H.o.B. South Carolina! The lineup: Divine Hersey, 3 Inches Of Blood, Shadows Fall and STATIC-X! It was a fun night. When Divine Hersey played, I was in the pit, bounced out and was going back in right when Tim Yeung chucked a busted stick in the crowd. I jumped in a live pit and grabbed it without a scratch! Later, I got to meet Dino Cazares, Joe Payne and Tommy Vext. Tim was Chilling, he had to dude was crazy on the drums that night. They all took time to talk to me and sign my new, slightly used drum stick (I still have) and a guitar pick i had made into a pendant beforehand, Dino signed it and I gave it to my brother (he's still got it). I also consider myself fortunate enough to have seen the others in their prime also. Wayne Static was awesome, his passing was so sad and while Static-X is still around its not the same. 3 inches of blood is gone so is Hersey, right place & right time kinda shit there!

Some of my moshpit memories:

2007: Went to see Bouncing Souls and I foolishly stepped into the moshpit when World/Inferno Friendship Society opened. Got my glasses knocked off and later recovered them, broken in half. Showed them to frontman Jack Terricloth after the show and he said he hoped I had insurance (I don't think I did.)

2014: Went to see The Dillinger Escape Plan, where opening band Trash Talk insisted everyone participate in moshing. I got knocked down into a puddle of beer but my glasses were safe.

2022: Saw Melt-Banana for the fourth time and - shortly before showtime - remembered how absolutely insane the crowd gets, particularly in a cramped venue. Managed to lean against the wall, bouncing countless moshers back with my arm crossed against my chest and getting my shoes stepped on repeatedly, but thankfully nothing was broken (it was a music festival called Oblivion Access that I traveled 1800 miles to attend, so that was a relief.)

Damn, Slayer concerts always ended up with several injured 😂I remember their first show I attended back on June 2011 I couldn't catch the bus back home so I had to sleep outside the "central" hospital cause it was the safest zone, and the injured just kept coming, how did I know they came from the show? The t-shirts and bunch of long haired men 😂 I remember seeing people on crutches, stretches or just plain carried by their friends. The show was a bloody mess, it rained blood, piss, spit, even shit poured that unforgettable night.

My 1st Slayer Show in the 90's was Awesome. 1600 people in a 1000 person club. They hadn't been allowed to play the area for exactly what you describe for several years.
We pull up and there were like 70 Bikes out front and a long line of Hells Angel's and other Hard ass types. It was the 1st show ID ever been to that had security shoulder to shoulder facing the crowd and blocking people like me from getting on the stage. We worked it out tho!
Somehow I didn't get the boot. The had to stop the show TWICE to say if WE didn't settle down they'd be forced to stop playing.
At the end they threw out Slayer picks and I didn't catch one. On the way out my friend says DUDE, YOU HAVE ONE SUCK TO YOUR CHEST! And I did. Big one. Obviously Tom's. I've seen Ministry and damn near every Industrial or hard core band that came through. I thought I'd seen it all. Slayer was special. RIP Jeff. Being no more than 7 feet away it was fucking AMAZING watching them play. Especially Jeff. Fastest fingers I've ever seen. I couldn't hear SHIT for like 3 days after.
I'll remember that show til my last days. Fucking SLAYER at the TOP of their game.
I saw them years later and it was excellent. By then my pit days were over and Jeff was gone. They still rocked the house tho.

We made a similar wall of death on Dagoba two weeks ago. Since when they came out it was still day - and was 101 Fahrenheit even if it was 7pm already! - there still was a big fence in the middle, so we had to make two moshpits. Even the vocalist got down to us and tried to unite them, but only then he noticed it was impossible. Neverrheless, it was massive! No one wanted to get out of the pit until the end of the concert. I'm glad I came out uninjured.

I had much more fun when Testament came out later and we did an even bigger wall of death on Into The Pit. It was so awesome until the wristband cut my wrist so hard it caused massive bleeding. My left hand hurt for 10 days and I could hardly touch a computer keyboard with it. There still are scars left and my wrist hurts at times.

Truth is, they are not that dangerous unless some dumbass starts doing dumbass things.

To be honest, this year's Alcatraz Lorna Shore pit was deliciously agressive. No kicking or hitting, but clearly experienced moshers going all the way. It was brutal and I enjoyed it.

When we talked about dangerous, I would say Indonesia should on the list. Some underground gigs are looks like gladiator arena instead of mosh-pit.
All the teenager (which is a students) are attempts to fight each other. You could see flying kicks, big fist in front of your face, cigar, even weapon such as knuckle.
Instead of having fun, you would end up lose your teeth.

i'm not a moshpit guy...got bad knees from football...but i survived the pit at Woodstock '99...that was an aberration. I must have plowed through 20 people gtfo of there...that was nuts. I guess it's not a true moshpit...but still....yikes!

Those madball shows at the Wetlands were always other level violent. But scariest pit I was ever in was slayer at clash of Titans tour (I was in the 7th grade) I literally thought I was in hell.
And Sepultura opening for ministry I went with about 11 people and soon as the first nite of arise hit we all got pushed in opposite directions I didn't run into any of them again until after ministry ended. Pure insanity.

You had to include Korn from Woodstock 99, that crowd was epic when they were jumping in waves. Although, it looks a lot more dangerous when you realize there was a layer of people on the ground underneath them getting bones broken.

I wouldn’t be afraid. Every mosh pit I’ve been in there’s usually some big guy stopping all the girls from getting knocked out. If you go in through just expect to get hurt. The most I’ve ever gotten is a bloody lip and some bruises.

I always stand dead (pun intended) centre in walls of death, go counter-clockwise in circle pits... you name it. nothing really bad happens. Even the police... i think if they joined in the circle pit the'd be welcomed (maybe tricky with their equipment, but still)

1:15 Daron did the same thing at the end of Toxicity when I saw them earlier this year in LA. Very fun mosh and never once felt in danger. Everyone there was there for the love of the music. I was sore as hell and did have a limp at the end though. 10/10.

My first metal show ever was black label society, slayer and judas priest who had just reunited with Halford at Rock 101 fest 2002-2003 in Houston. People were moshing during the slayer set in the seated area and trying to pull the seats up from the floor lol. Good stuff

I lost my glasses during Slayer's headline set at Tattoo The Planet in the point theatre (now the 3 arena) in Dublin in October 2001. I had just resigned myself to losing a shoe at Slayer's last ever Irish show in the 3 arena in November 2018 when I stumbled and felt the lost shoe under my foot and managed to get it back on. In the marquee in Cork in June 2016 I saw random items of clothing flying at various stages during Slayer's show. At the end of the night as the crowd was dispersing there, in the middle of the floor, stood a man bollock naked who didn't give a fuck. He was chatting to his friends, elated at having witnessed another powerful Slayer show. They're my main mosh pit stories.

My greatest ever mosh pit experiences were a wall of death during the ‘wardance’ bit of Anthrax ‘Indians’ track and of course, Slayer ‘Reign In Blood’ - in the Anthrax one I had someone land on my leg and damn near blew out my knee - I hobbled out of that one! Such fun! I miss those days….

I’m a short guy and I’ve never fallen in the 2 pits I’ve been in (because I just grab on to somebody then continuing slamming into everybody) but I’ve never really been in danger at all, I’ve gotten completely shoved into another person, adrenaline was going tho didnt feel nothing until the next day, my legs and arms hurt so bad and I had bruises everywhere, didn’t regret it all tho

These walls of death is the closest thing to a medieval baattle that you can get in this day of age i love it. My forst mossh pit was two years ago when i was 28 and i felt like i got into a fight with a 18 wheeler and a elephant but well worth it and when someone got knocked out the huge wall of death stopped until they got up it was amazing

the only really dangerous situation of those is the small hardcore show in 90s new york. in every big festival / stadium there are a lot of security people and crowd members who pick you up and call the medics.
in a ny hardcore show in the 90s all they care about is crowdkilling and nobody gives a shit if you're hurt. quite the opposite

The most intense pit I've ever been in was when I saw Exodus in 2022. They played Strike Of The Beast at the end of their set as they often do. And as they often do, a wall of death happened. A dude who looked like albino Shaq ran at me in the pit, and i dint remember the 5 minutes that followed

I think y’all forgot about the entire hardcore genre and their pits lol. Even at hardcore shows, with the pure violence, punching, roundhouse kicks to the temple, Metal crowds are always the nicest people. Yes, even 95% of the dudes that will knock you tf out in a hardcore pit. I had a drawstring bag with a zipper in a recent pit I was in at a festival. It has all of my personal belongings in it. Wallet, phone, vapes, car keys, etc. The zipper ripped open in the pit and I didn’t even noticed at the time. Everything fell out, and not just that, all my cards fell out of my wallet. At the end of the song (keep in mind this is a massive crowd), I found every single one of my items, along with everything that fell out of my wallet before the band could even start the next song. Metal crowds are so amazing, and I’ve felt the most love with strangers that I ever have at metal shows.

I love moshing I find it so fun nothing beats that feeling of bouncing everywhere with no idea where you’re going next but I don’t like doing it for any heavy metal bands because people just start swinging and punching. I went and saw Carnifex I went into the pit on the first song and a guy started swinging trying to hurt people he hit me in the nose and I got a deviated septum and a concussion. It was my first and last hardcore pit. I’ll still go into rock mosh pits though since I’ve never had a problem
