The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Out Of Thin Air
Various Artists Lyrics

You showed me the world
When I was all locked up inside,
You reached out your hand
And took me on a magic carpet ride
One look at your smile,
And I could see the light
People like you don't come out of thin air.
Oh, Jasmine
You don't understand
There is so much that you don't see
Just think, if you can,
What growing up had to be like for me
Your father's a man
Who taught you who you are--
Mine was never there
So how can you say I don't come out of thin air?
There's so much I want to know
You've got the chance to learn
If it means I'd have to go
I'll be right here when you return...
Our wedding can wait
I love you
I think it's worth this small delay
Maybe you're right
And won't it be great
To have your father see our wedding day?
I've waited so long
It isn't too late
to learn the truth
And now at last, we can finally say
Your father is really there
There's so much that we might share
And you'll finally learn
(You) (I) don't come out of thin air
The lyrics of "Out of Thin Air" by Various Artists are about two lovers, Jasmine and Aladdin, who come from very different worlds. In the first verse, Aladdin expresses his gratitude to Jasmine for showing him a different world where he can finally see the light, after being locked up inside. He recognizes that Jasmine is the kind of person who doesn't appear out of thin air and expresses that he is grateful she is in his life.
In the second verse, Jasmine tries to understand Aladdin's world and how it is different from hers. She empathizes with him, recognizing that growing up was different for both of them, and that his father was never there for him. Jasmine assures him that he is not alone and that she wants to learn more about him and his world. She recognizes that Aladdin is not someone who came out of thin air, but that he has a history and a past that she wants to learn about.
Overall, the lyrics of "Out of Thin Air" express the idea that people come from different worlds and have different experiences, but the right person can help them see the light and take them on a magic carpet ride of love and understanding.

You are an incredibly gifted young lady. Don't ever let the giant record company or Corporation try to hijack your vision and make it their own. I can tell that you're writing from your own emotions and I find it very beautiful.
