The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.

Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.

Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.

Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.

Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Then when digital tuning, synthesizers, and game changers like auto-tune, lip sync, and over dubbing... it was just how much you could be marketed.

I'd say the beatles just crushed it making albums, Queen was the text book perfect concert at Wembly (1986).. Celine Dion, and Josh Groban maybe Best voices..for sheer voice talent.. but none of that matters.. especially now when music is shared, copied and pirated... you can't possibly count "sales" and that's figured into "play" amounts.. like I still hear justin beibers "baby" in my local super market in 2023. ..but was probably part of a 90's contract.. so he got todays January 2023 "play/sales" credit BACK in the 90's..because some super market signed a contract back then..but Beiber has to play in that market till 2040...lol.
So who know... I think most music now isn't about real music, real talent, real voice, good vocals, or any music value at all.. it's almost always what's "trending".. you know.. what a corporation like Amazon, apple, etc puts on your phone screen.. and enough of us monkeys hit that button.. then "Trending" appears next to the picture.. then more of us monkeys hit that picture.. and the monkeys say hmm...
The beatles had to have people physically go into a store.. pick up a record.. pay for it..and go home and play it.. and that was only one sale.

Invincible was selling faster than Thriller before Sony stopped promoting it so they could pressure MJ to sell his half of Sony (look into it its pretty dark). His style will forever be relevant with each new generation. From the 50s to the 80s, the best music on earth was basically the most popular. After that, you start seeing really good artists not quite topping the charts as much.

Today, the best music doesn’t even chart. I think it has something to do with technology making it possible to create music without the biggest baddest money interests backing you up. You saw that on a mild level in the 90s, where the best music was mainstream but didn’t totally top the charts, and now it’s absolutely true today

this is a very cool way to look at these artists' sales data and gain a stronger sense of their longetivity and such. A huge shift happens as digital media takes hold, but Impressive to see the staying power of Queen even after Freddie Mercury's death. Elvis also has an impressive longevity along with Michael Jackson and The Beatles. I was very taken with how Madonna stayed on that list almost the entire 20 years she is on it--and only dipping off it briefly towards the end of her time on it. Who knows how much longer she might have remained there if radio didn't literally stop playing her new music because of ageism.

But I don't fully agree with your way of seeing the music scene. The internet has expanded the possibilities and there are 8 Billion people on this planet. There are musicians you and I have never heard of who have hundreds of thousands, even millions of fans and are living well. Because it's a big wide world out there. But even if things were limited, there are plenty of folks who are not as talented as Madonna, nor as innovative who could step aside for greatness. She hasn't laid her crown down just yet.

Actually, Elton is, imho, the best "musician" as he's composed, I think, close to 500 songs. Michael Jackson, I think, composed about 150 songs. Elvis didn't compose any, that I know of. Elvis & Michael never played a musical instrument in their concerts or recordings, correct me if I'm wrong - though they did play a few instruments in private. So, with Elton's extraordinary skill as a pianist, all the while singing, it seems to me that he would be considered the best over-all "musician." That's just my opinon though I absolutely love all three of them more than I can even think of a word to use to do them justice.

Interesting trends. Rock dropped off significantly after Pop overtook it in the eighties and never regained its lead. And the entire alternative rock genre barely registered in the nineties.

Elvis and the Beatles had a fierce dispute in the early and mid-70s and at the end of the decade it ended with Elton John and the Eagles competing. It’s interesting to look at how we purchase music can change this list. Some musicians/bands from the 70’s 80’s are SOOO much better than some from the 2010’s yet were incredibly under sold. Some had rights purchased from them yet are still influential today but won’t be counted because the rights aren’t theirs anymore. Not saying all from old era better than new just some.

Tastes don't change That much. I love disco, grew up through the 80s and clubbing early 90s. Guess which music i Still enjoy. BUT the bigger question is, when did i stop buying music? I will happily throw on some trance music or lofi on YT and cast it to my TV and try to catch Tiestos weekly show on my local radio station, but will not buy anything. My frequent music buying days are done. It isn't that tastes changed so much as those who run the industry changed their offering and the current group of buyers handed over their money accordingly.... When One Direction were a thing i was like Who? Never heard of them. But to those who buy music it was a different story... Music buyers today will leave comments on some 80s and early 90s stuff how good it is revealing they have those same tastes, but that style music is not available to be bought and the labels don't push it.

Definitely. You look at an older band like pink floyd that fully relied on a great full album becase even though they had hits, there preformance was based off the whole album. then you look at a more modern artist like Si who made one catchy song to get his fame. This is because people used to listen to an album all the way through, especially since they bought Cds or records but now people listen to the top 20 songs playing on the radio and those songs are played and milked for all they have. Although quality always has been fairly important, quantity is irrelevant in the music world now.

Destiny’s Child was everywhere. And you would think they would that Beyonce would’ve been on the chart longer that’s she was. She was literally up there for 2007! And Beyoncé’s Lemonade album got rewarded for being the best album for whatever year. Also everyone says Lady GaGa and Beyonce was the queens. And to see that Beyonce was only up there for 2007 then Lady GaGa shot up the charts like no one’s business.
Considering the fact that LeToya’s album reached #1 and Beyoncé’s 2003 album, with a bunch of hits like Crazy In Love (Literally the best hit of 2003), Baby Boy (A number 1 hit for 9 weeks) and Naughty Girl (A number 3 hit) and Nelly’s song, Dilemma, which was featuring Kelly Rowland was the best hit of 2002 and Michelle Williams was already at backup singer for Monica, and Farrah also had other solo career plans. Destiny’s ruled the late 90s and early to mid 00s. (Bills Bills Bills, Say My Name, Independent Woman Pt, 1, and Bootylicious all #1 hits) This comment it sooo long I’m not even gonna go into all the convincing facts that Destiny’s Child or Beyonce should’ve been up there longer if at all.

Watching this surprised me in many ways. I expected to see artists like Spice Girls, Alanis Morissette and Beyonce in the list, and I didn't expect Taylor Swift to be that high in the late 00s. I remember she was known back then but definitely not as popular as now
