White Rabbit

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
To call Alice, when she was just small

When the men on the chessboard get up
And tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving slow
Go ask Alice, I think she will know

When logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead
And the white knight is talking backwards
And the red queen's off with her head

Remember what the dormouse said
Feed your head, feed your head

Overall Meaning

"White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane was penned by lead singer Grace Slick (who started as a model and was turned down by Screen Gems, who heard her singing) after her reflecting experience with hallucinogens to explore the rabbit hole of her mind. The song is interspersed with a series of surreal and symbolic images that portray the expansion of the mind through psychedelics. The song breaks down the barriers of conventionality, suggesting the concept of exploring what lies beneath the surface of everyday mundane life.

The opening verse suggests how one pill could distort one's reality, making them either larger or smaller. And mother's pills, which are supposed to alleviate pain, turn out to be ineffective, subtly mocking the limitations and dependencies of traditional medicine. Alice, who grows ten feet tall, is a reference to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which is a direct allusion to the rabbit hole allegory, where Alice's fall through the rabbit hole symbolizes a voyage to a dreamlike reality. The song encourages the listener to think beyond society's prescribed ideas and to question the authorities on what constitutes the truth.

The second stanza's allusions offer an interpretation of the hookah-smoking caterpillar as a trippy-vision and the "White Rabbit" character as a lure to new experiences. It suggests that trying to explore the wildness of the world while on drugs leads to a breakdown of normality and a hyper awareness of the metaphysical.

The last section addresses the reliance of order to make sense of things, which often acts as a hindrance to creativity and divergent thinking, so "feeding your head" with alternate sources of knowledge could be beneficial.

Until a few months ago, i just knew the name "Pink", and thought it was not my cup of tea.
Then i came across her cover of this song live, and was pleasantly surprised. I said "wow, she really can sing!"
Then i looked some other videos from her, and now i can tell that in my opinion she is the greatest artist alive and performing. And she is a very very beautiful person, outside and most of all inside.
.
i encourage you to watch some of her videos, for example : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I4eSuazui8&t=1s

But no matter which one, they all are great, especially live.
Pink is also the only artist who can cover Bohemian Rhapsody without being ridiculous, on the contrary, she is absolutely great, and i'm sure Freddy Mercury would have loved it

I don’t usually leave comments… Pink and her version of this magnificence deserves all the positive comments she could possibly handle❣️I typically don’t like remakes of classics, however, she not only did this song and original artists justice, she brought back to us real music in the most phenomenal way… Through her heart, insight and raw talent!

My older brother and I would listen to this song endlessly (I wish he knew of this particular version before he died), he recently passed from a seven-year bout with pancreatic cancer, a phenomenon he lasted that long with it! This was amongst his favorite of songs… I’m sure my brother Gary is hugging you from wherever he is now🙏🏼

Pink, if you see this comment… You are wonderful in every aspect. An Angel that walks amongst us normals, if you will.

If I had Johnny Depp at my fingertips, he and I would both hug you lol

Be well always… Sending lots of love to you and your family. Happy new year 2022!

If you told me someone covered white rabbit I would roll my eyes. There are some things you just don't mess with. But then I heard pink do this. And DAMN. She did it justice. Well done

@andrealb4363

Same, well said

@4of20

I believe even Grace Slick said this was her favorite cover of White Rabbit@@andrealb4363

@richardslater8980

Never knew this cover existed, stumbled on it because of the new matrix trailer. This is brilliant! 👌👌👌

@cpurickyahoo

Matrix trailer is the Jefferson Airplane original with a new orchestral accompaniment. It's an amazing song, and Pink's cover is as good as the original. But the remix on the trailer is really the best.

@Mike19737

Yup. Let's see how far the rabbit hole goes! 👀👁👁

@DamarMinistries

Same here lol

@fighters1000

Never gonna be the same... Jefferson airplane is so much better than this

I did. The trailer is Grace Slick. No question. You can disagree, but that won't change it.
