I didn’t realize how many of us there are. I was named after this song too. My mom was born in 58 and her mom would sing this to her when she was little and it was her favorite. But she said she wanted to have a unique spelling for me and every night she’d sing this to me before she died. I was missing her so I found this. Lol.

I was born in 1984, I'm almost 34 and I grew up listening to this music as well as 60s, 70s, 80s, 9 & up to date....I happilly admit that you, buddy, have got it down pat right....Obviously there are gems in (almost) every year and every decade had it's golden ones but this era of music didn't focus on the music video hence sex appeal played a very small if any role in it which is what I believe straight up ruins most of the music today...Talent was the main prerequisite back then and it's sorely lacking in today's crap

My late grandfather (who absolutely loved this song), his name was also Ray. He was 11 in 1960 when this came out. He grew up on a farm near Needville, Texas, and he often told this story: he had a Victrola in 1960, and he listened to this all the time. It drove his father nuts, but his mother loved the song, too. At one point, there was a dog named after the song, which I believe they got around 1962.

I loved this song when I was young and I still do. Speaking of things that drive your parents nuts, Mad Magazine came out with a RPM 45. It was called "It's a Gas". We had the only stereo in town and we were almost run out of town for it.

Remember this song as a kid when it was played on am radio in 1960. Superb intro and arrangement reflective of a more innocent time among youth when being honest and vulnerable wasn't viewed as weakness. Sang with much empathy and sincerity by a man who knew what hurt meant. Enjoy your reward in heaven, Ray, your songs will live on with me and millions of others.

Greetings to all my brothers and sisters of Rhythm & Blues and of the many other Rock'n'Roll sounds that filled the airwaves during the 50s and 60s that defined our loves, losses, hopes and dreams.

Besides hearing the latest hits blaring from the radios at the local stores in NYC, I was blessed to have had a teenage aunt that would put on her latest 45 purchases: Devil or Angel by the Clovers, and many others.

Now that I'm 72, these "oldies but goodies" have become immortal, and although I have an eclectic taste, I do need some level of punctuation, identifiable melody and an uncoded story line in my songs. I'm not built for anything more esoteric than "Shoobe doo pah pahdah".
