Shatterday
Vendetta Red Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our days are numbered 666
and I'll begin the countdown by calling off the circus
somewhere in these cryptic scriptures
I'll find myself drifting in a sky full of scars they cut into you
Blisters rose colored you
mayday we're going down
These mescaline memories are morose
Your kerosene company is comatose
Our days are numbered 321
And when you bit the bullet I held the smoking gun
Somewhere in these violent volumes
I'll find myself drifting in a sky full of scars
And I would sick up half of my cold eye
to set you on your head
If I were you then I would memorize

this loose lipped lullaby instead of waiting
carving out your own.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Vendetta Red's song "Shatterday" are filled with cryptic, yet powerful imagery that speaks to themes of mortality, the passage of time, and the fleeting nature of life. The opening line "Our days are numbered 666" immediately sets a foreboding tone, invoking ideas of devilish mysticism and dark foreshadowing. The singer then goes on to call off the circus, suggesting that the superficial and distracting elements of life need to be set aside in order to confront one's own mortality.

The lines "Somewhere in these cryptic scriptures, I'll find myself drifting in a sky full of scars they cut into you" suggest a search for meaning and understanding in the face of pain and suffering. The use of "scars" as a metaphor for the wounds inflicted upon one's soul by life's hardships is particularly poignant. The refrain of "mayday we're going down" reinforces the idea that there is a sense of impending doom that the singer is grappling with.

As the song progresses, the countdown continues with the lines "Our days are numbered 321, and when you bit the bullet I held the smoking gun". This twist in the narrative adds a layer of complexity to the singer's internal struggle, implying that they may have played a role in someone's demise. The singer returns to the theme of searching for answers in "violent volumes" and the "sky full of scars", and then muses that they would "sick up half of my cold eye to set you on your head". This line is particularly jarring, suggesting a violent impulse that may have contributed to the singer's guilt.

The song ends with a warning to the listener to "memorize this loose-lipped lullaby instead of waiting, carving out your own" - perhaps suggesting that the only way to cope with the inevitability of death is to confront it head-on, rather than being caught off guard.

I know your comment is 10 years old, but I had a similar experience with Papa Roach a long time ago. I was in a bar in Salt Lake and the band was there handing out demo tapes (Yes, I said tapes…) with 1 song per side - one of them being Last Resort. I was like, “Yeah, thanks man. I’ll definitely listen to it later…” and just blew him off. Lol. Still have that thing somewhere…
