Venus Hum released their self titled debut through Mono-Fi Music on April 24th of 2001.
Their first Major Label full-length album, Big Beautiful Sky, was released April 1st, 2003 through MCA. That same year, Venus Hum toured with and opened for Blue Man Group; Annette sang vocals on "I Feel Love".
In 2004 Venus Hum released their Songs for Superheros EP, a collaboration with television producer J J Abrahms. However, Annette had developed immensely painful vocal nodes and had to see a speech pathologist to relearn her singing ability.
2006 saw the release of The Colors in the Wheel which features an edgier sound from their previous work.

Birds and Fishes
Venus Hum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I saw the one go up the dam
And come back down
And come back down again
What is this?
If not to know and be known
To share your plate
Oh, it's been a dark time
I remember it well
It is in me still
I have seen that I can die
I'm reminded and I wave my own flag
I saw the one go out the window
I saw the one go up the dam
And come back down
And come back down again
School of fish
One's lending me hope
Who share their plates
Fighting for truth, joy, justice, or
Just try again
Or lend a kind eye
I could just give up
Maybe sleep all day
Turn the TV on
Or wave my own flag
I saw the one go out the window
I saw the one go up the dam
And come back down
And come back down again
Again, again
I'll try again
The lyrics to Venus Hum's song Birds and Fishes contain a few different themes of perseverance, connection, and hope. The opening lines describe the singer witnessing something unusual - possibly a bird or an object - and then seeing it come back down again, but the meaning behind this is left open-ended. The singer then asks, "What is this? If not to know and be known, to share your plate," which suggests a desire for understanding and connection with others - to share a meal or a moment with someone. They then acknowledge that there have been difficult times ("It's been a dark time") and that they have experienced the fragility of life ("I have seen that I can die"), but they remain resilient and continue to "wave [their] own flag."
The chorus repeats the imagery of something going out the window and up and down a dam, but then introduces the idea of a "school of fish" who are "lending [the singer] hope" and "fighting for truth, joy, justice" or simply "just try[ing] again." The singer recognizes the power of this collective effort and the possibility of finding strength in numbers. They also acknowledge the temptation to give up or numb themselves with distractions like TV or sleep ("Maybe sleep all day/Turn the TV on"), but ultimately come back to the idea of determination and trying again.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of the difficulties and uncertainties of life, but also the importance of perseverance, connection, and hope in moving forward.
