The name "Versi & the Proles" derives from the George Orwell novel 1984.
In the novel a machine, called the Versificator, produces all music and literature for the Proles.
The Versificator stops party members from having to engage in creative thought and creates music for the lower classes whose main concerns are family, gossip, films, football, beer and the lottery. In the novel, "The proles remain human."
