The amount of orchestration condensed into 217 seconds of what's essentially a "pop song" is astounding. It sounds fresh every time I hear it, regardless of how many years it's been. "Timeless" and "masterpiece" are often used to describe songs, and many of them are lesser than this gem. To conceive and record this in 1966 is even more impressive. If musicians strive to reach this level of creativity and fail, it's possible to still be deemed a success.

My father was home from Munich in late '66 and tells a great story about his time in Chicago/Des Plaines, IL during the Holiday season...with this song playing on WLS 890 (Art Roberts show), he remembers heading northbound (right at sunset) on Milwaukee avenue when he came over a hill and approached a red stop-light in the distance (Glenview Rd. & Milwaukee Ave.), along with two cars preparing to drag race. My father said he quickly down-shifted his '62 Plymouth 413 into 2nd, and used the oncoming lanes to perfectly time the changing of the red stop-light to green, passing both cars. He said in a very short time he was up to over 100MPH and could only see headlights in his rearview mirror as he approached the underpass (294 Tollway) on Milwaukee avenue. Well, facing southbound was a uniquely positioned police car taking radar under the dimly lit bridge. My father said he fully stayed into it, knowing the cop had to make his way further southbound to clear the divided highway and hook a U-turn. With the two cars still racing and still way behind him, he turned off his headlights and made a right on Sanders road and got to his destination in Glenview without issue!

He just made it back to Germany before the blizzard of '67 ripped through Chicago. Glad he got to get a Booby's burger too, while in town.

Love my Old Man's stories...all have ties to great music from a great time (60's). He can timestamp memories to music.

This was such a treat watching live, I'm glad that I got to at least see a band that existed in the 60's in my lifetime. Of course there was only two living original members there and the rest were new ones, still was freaking awesome.

Quite possibly the pinnacle of 60s music. Brian Wilson's arrangement is the best I have ever heard and the production is astounding. It's unbelievable how much is going on here in under four minutes. And those harmonies. I would put this into the ten greatest songs EVER - it is absolutely timeless and gives me goose bumps every time I hear it. I don't know where but she sends me there...wow.

Heard this song countless times, but the one that I always call to mind is when in June of 1967 we were transferred from Hawaii to Guam, we stopped at Wake Island to refuel (Boeing 707) and since we could not stay on board the aircraft while refueling, we all were crammed into the passenger terminal (size of a phone booth). This song came on the radio and whenever I hear it, it takes me back to June 1967 and the smell of 60 or so sweaty people in close quarters listening to some truly outstanding music. Powerful memories - can hear it like it was just a few minutes ago. Thanks for posting

I remember when they had this song remastered in the brother studios. My dad had many head scratching moments recording this that took most of his home time to perfect the sound to make it sound really good. He’s a perfectionist!

a couple of years ago, i had just taken a couple tabs of acid. it was my day off, and it was a calm, serene, beautiful summer day. the birds were out, the the trees were swaying gently in the wind, and the sun was just about to start setting over the array of houses in the neighborhood. i was sitting on the porch, coming up on my trip, the visuals and auditory nuances were just starting to kick in, listening to my playlist, and this song came on. i had heard it before of course and always loved it, but this time it immediately grabbed my attention and had me hooked from beginning to end. it was the most peaceful experience i’ve ever had while tripping. the break between 2:15 to about 2:55 was incredible. it seemed as though the birds were chirping the melody along with the flute (best way i can describe it) as it played.

What a superb arrangement. What fascinates me is that not only did Brian Wilson use a Theremin in this song, but that he modulated the tone up perfectly in the last few choruses. He employed an electronic instrument that was almost always associated with “creepy” scenes in tv and movies, and turned it into a classic rock song hook. Brilliant.
