Change Partners
Vic Damone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Must you dance every dance
With the same fortunate man?
You have danced with him since the music began,
Won't you change partners and dance with me?

Must you dance quite so close,
With your lips touching his face?
Can't you see I'm longing to be in his place?
Won't you change partners and dance with me?

Ask him to sit this one out,
And while you're alone,
I'll tell the waiter to tell him
He's wanted on the telephone,

You've been locked in his arms
Ever since heaven-knows-when,
Won't you change partners and then,
You may never want to change partners again.

Ask him to sit this one out,
And while you're alone,
I'll tell the waiter to tell him
He's wanted on the telephone,

You've been locked in his arms
Ever since heaven-knows-when,

Won't you change partners and then,
You may never have to change partners again.

Overall Meaning

In Vic Damone’s song “Change Partners,” the singer addresses a woman who he has seen dancing with the same man all night. He asks her if she is stuck to this man for the rest of the night, and then pleads with her to change partners and dance with him instead. The singer gets even more passionate in his plea, by asking her to not dance so closely with her current dancing partner and explaining how much he is longing to be in his place.

The singer then devises a plan to separate the woman from her current partner, so that he can have his chance to dance with her. He suggests asking the man to sit out of one dance, promising to make sure he receives a message that he is wanted on the phone. The singer continues to express how long the woman has been locked in her current partner's arms, emphasizing the importance of changing partners and getting out of the “comfort” zone. He then suggests that the woman may not need to change partners again.

Overall, the lyrics can be interpreted as a plea from the singer to the woman to let go of her attachment to her current partner and try something new for a change.
