The Pleasure of Her Company
Vic Damone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(La-da-da-da)
The Golden Gate, from the top of the mark
The lights below, like jewels in the dark
I′d trade you, every memory
For the pleasure, of her company

The fun of taking, a cable car ride
The lonely steamer, that waits for the tide
I'd give you all these, cheerfully
For the pleasure, of her company

Sometimes, when we′re just dining
A sandwich, seems like, such a treat
There are no candles, but still they're shining
They start to gleam, when our eyes meet

There are some pleasures, we mortals can't know
They′re known to angels alone, even so
I′m sure the angels, envy me
The pleasure, of her company

I'm sure the angels, envy me
The pleasure, of her company

(La-da-da-da)
(La-da-da-da-da-da)
(La-da-da-da)

(La-da-da-da-da-da)

Overall Meaning

In "The Pleasure of Her Company” by Vic Damone, the lyrics describe the desire to be with a loved one and the joy that their company brings. The song reflects on the wonderful memories and experiences that could be traded for even just a moment with this special person. The opening lines set the scene for the longing and admiration that the singer feels for their companion, depicting the beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge from above and the twinkling lights below. The idea of trading memories highlights how much the singer values their partner, willing to give up precious moments in time just to be with them.

The lyrics continue to describe simple pleasures, such as a cable car ride or sitting by a lonely steamer waiting for the tide, and how the singer would give them up in a heartbeat for the pleasure of their companion's company. The chorus repeats the idea that the singer knows they have something special and that even angels may envy the pleasure of their company. The final verse describes how just being with their loved one can make even the simplest of things seem special, like a sandwich becoming a luxurious treat. The song ultimately showcases how the simple pleasure of being around someone you love can make any situation feel magical.

I searched and searched for this, and managed to find it on Amazon. Made my day now, as I can play it on youtube. Such a beautiful recording by, as Frank Sinatra once said "the best pipes in the business". Brings tears to my eyes. Why was Vic Damone not celebrated the way Frank was I will never understand. Such a wonderful voice.

This was such an important part of my growing up. I was in high school and remember going to the Crown Room that year with my friends. I loved the movie and would look for
the locations in the film in the city. I'm now leading tours of SF Moving Movie tour/on tourbus, that I created 12 yrs ago with movie clips. I have 3 clips from this movie on my tour. It was one of the few films; filmed entirely in the city and captures the elegance and sophistication of The City... I would love to see a more updated version of this song. Maybe Chris Isaak?
