Rainbow Cake
Vince Jones Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Kids on the street, they're playing ball
She falls, and cries
The grass it wet and the leaves are brown
And I call them in, from two stories up
She whispers she loves me
Forty-two years after we
We have some rainbow cake
To know we'll never play like them again
She whispers she loves me
Forty-two years after we
To join our lives as one through bends or breaks
We have some rainbow cake
To know we'll never play like them again
The lyrics to Vince Jones's song "Rainbow Cake" describe a morning scene with the singer waking up at 9am and having a cup of tea while children play games outside. The singer hears a child crying and calls them inside. The singer whispers "she loves me" forty-two years after joining their life with their partner. They share rainbow cake in acceptance that they will never be able to play like the children outside again.
The lyrics appear to reflect on the transience of life and the fleeting nature of certain experiences. The singer observes the children playing and is reminded of their own youth and the experiences that come with it. They also acknowledge that they have grown older and that some experiences are no longer available to them. However, they are content to share moments of love with their partner and celebrate it with a sweet treat.

Absolutely suburb. Two of my favourite Australian jazz artists who I have lived and followed since I saw Vince on the ABC in 1984. Can’t believe there are any thumbs down - luddites! The progressions in this song are gold. Genius writing from Vince and Paul’s embellishment has the delicacy of a soufflé. Yum

Love them both have not seen Vince for years but have seen him many times and have many of his albums, I was lucky to see Paul in Sandgate at the end of 22. They are both superb

Vince did a live performance for TV with Grabowsky & band circa 1991. Rainbow Cake was performed. I knew nothing of Vince up to that point but I taped that broadcast on VHS and played it on many occasions. Good memories.
