Virgos Merlot was a hard rock band formed in 1998 in Birmingham, Alabama. Their singular album, Signs of a Vacant Soul, was released in 1999, and featured densely-produced atmospheric guitars, a heavy rhythm presence, and the commanding vocals of lead singer Brett Hestla.
Perhaps due to lackluster sales and its lukewarm critical reception, the original lineup disbanded sometime after the release of Signs of a Vacant Soul. The band Virgos Merlot later reformed for a short while without guitarist Jason Marchant. Due to legal red tape, they were known simply as Virgos and released their only album, The Path of Least Resistance, under Hestla and Marchant's old record label, Devine. The Devine was also the name of the band Hestla and Marchant were members of prior to the formation of Virgos Merlot. The Devine's only record, Victim, was also released under this label.
After touring with Creed as replacement for bassist Brian Marshall, Hestla joined Dark New Day in 2004.
Marchant, JD and Ledbetter went on to form the band Red Halo. Chris Dickerson later played bass for Downstem [with JD on drums] and Course of Nature.

In the song “Drown,” the artist Virgos warns his lover that she is better off alone before she is drug under by him. He suggests that he should find a different home and be on his own before the situation gets too out of hand. Although he does not want to live without her, he acknowledges that he needs to remove himself before he can cause her any more harm. He then pleads with her not to let him drown while he tests her patience and loyalty.
These lyrics can be interpreted as a plea for help to save a drowning relationship. The artist recognizes that his actions may lead to the end of their relationship but cannot seem to stop himself from testing his lover's boundaries. Rather than continuing to drag her underwater with him, he suggests that it would be best for both of them if they went their separate ways. Despite this, he begs her not to let him drown, indicating that he still hopes for a future in which they can save their relationship.

As I always say in these comments, your generals are like personals for me. Our conflict was exactly that; we were supposed to link up(he’s at a distance) and he kept evading me. But he would tell me that he loved me and always speak as if we had a future together. Very hot and cold. I know that he loves the way I express myself, he’s always complimented me on that aspect; it’s always something he paid attention to. He has told me before that he doesn’t know why he feels so comfortable expressing himself vulnerably with me. The tower was me abruptly discontinuing communication with him due to the aforementioned issue; I got tired of the confusing energy. We had so much in common, and related to each other very well.
