About the wine in the video. I found this somewhere online. It seems to have more detail than what you provided on your page about the NZ Sauv blanc.
VARIETIES: Sauvignon Blanc (95%) and Semillon (5%)

CLONES: MS, 316, 317, 5385, 2413, BVRC14

VINIFICATION: Twenty-nine different parcels of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon from the different Certified Organic Australia vineyard blocks were pressed and then fermented separately so that we had a greater range of options when creating the final blend. Approximately eighty percent of the final blend was fermented using wild yeast for added complexity and texture. The Semillon and approximately ten percent of the Sauvignon have been fermented in aged French barriques.

The finished wine has an alcohol of 14.0 percent, pH of 3.27, 6.2g/L titratable acid and 3.0g/L residual sugar.

Using what I’ve learned from watching these videos and reading from my magnum edition Wine Folly book, I was able to correctly pick the wines just based off your descriptions. While I’m nowhere close to taking the guildsomm course and test, it’s worlds ahead of where I was. Thanks.

That was great fun, thank you! Admittedly, leg viscosity remains a mystery to me. But no matter! I would have thought that I was a cooler climate drinker, but watching your video, by the way you described the first wine, I would have preferred the first wine almost definitely! I mean, just give me anything French, really. Amiright?!

Hahahaha! Yes, viscosity is a bit of a mis-nomer. it's only really useful if you're tasting a bunch of wines side-by-side because it changes depending on the temperature and humidity of the place you're in. So, you can only really use it comparatively. That being said, I have noticed that wines under 12.5% ABV tend to have trouble tearing up on the glass, they look a lot more watery... "generally speaking" of course.

Let me tell you, that shirt is not a medium yellow. That is an earth-crumbling, crystal-shattering, all consuming yellow.

Jokes aside. Really enjoyed this. Will look in to buying the book. I've enjoyed wine but never knew how to actually start evolving my knowledge and ability to taste. And now it's presented by the most yellow thing I've ever seen, and with a sommelier underneath.

Mark England hey Mark, check the link with all the details. As far as production methods are concerned, they’re very similar. Also, Grgich and Napa Valley come with a strong brand due to all Mike Grgich’s history in Napa Valley.

If you’re doing a taste test between warm and cold weather wines, it would be better to taste two from similar areas, like north of Italy vs south of Italy to retain as much constants as possible. Otherwise there’s way too much variability when it’s different continents.
Unless you’re tasting multiple wines in different regions. If not, what’s even the point of a taste test?

Thanks for the comment! I want to agree with you, but I also don't. There are so many additional factors that just being on the same continent won't fix. So, I'm honestly not sure how to answer your question and whether or not I agree with you or not! aeei! Wine is complex, no? The one thing I will say is that marketplace is a huge factor in what I taste. So, if I can't find it in the store (online or off) then I can't really do it. In this case, I did the best with what was available. Thanks again!

Mike Grgich makes some amazing wine. Not sure why he didnt get the cult following when he left Cheteau Montelena after the famous 1976 Paris Wine Tasting. His Cabernets are amazing.

A bit of an unfair comparison don't you think? One of the best SB producers from California vs. a mass produced NZ SB that sells for far less than 1/2 the price of Grgich outside of California (in Quebec, Grgich fumee blanc is around 50 CAD while seresin retails for about 20 CAD). Some top shelf Alto Adige (terlan etc.) or liore valley (cotat, riffault, etc.) would have fared far better. As a category, warm climate sauv blanc rarely stands up to the balance, nuance, and elegance of great European producers.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I agree with you that Terlan, Cotat, Riffault are good. It would have been fun to compare these with Grgich.

Of course, there's more on this topic than meets the eyet. I know that import pricing to Canada from US makes the prices between these two wines fluctuate a bunch. For example, from my perspective NZ wine is 21, Grgich is 31 which is a lot closer. Also, what you didn't see was me taste this wine with a couple others later on from South Africa and Loire Valley. That part got eliminated. All things aside. Check the tech sheets on the blog post. They were made very similarly. NZ sauv blanc can be very good. I agree this example might not have been the best, but I've been surprised and delighted more often than not.

Wouldn't a fume blanc get some toasty smoky vanilla characters from the oak? Since it's an oaked style of SB. Acidity level should be one of the big key differences too right?

If you look at the tech sheets. It was technically fermented and aged in oak (all neutral), but I did not detect any oak on this wine. No smoke, vanilla, creaminess. I am a tea fan and I tried to like wine, wine seems kinda a little bit too bitter and "harsh" for me. Any recommendation for me? anyone? :-)

@Wine Folly Heck, got replied right from the host. Thanks Madeline for the reply and recommendations :). I drink tea straight. Seems like you are right, riesling (Dry) has the qualities and complexity of tea. I will try the other tho. I also find red wine such as merlot too bitter :( . It's hard for me to find "not too bitter" reds :(

I recommend starting with sweeter wines. The "bitter" part in wine is hard to get used to. If you're a fan of tea, do you drink it straight or add sugar / cream? Wine is far closer to a straight black (and somewhat bitter) tea. That being said, you might be really impressed with varieties like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Moscato d'Asti (the good Moscato) to get you started..

I've tasted some Chenin Blanc and Bordeaux-style reds. The reds had a really super unique "spice" note, almost like paprika or Aleppo pepper. Really fascinating terroir you've got over there!
