Vonda Shepard was born in New York but her family relocated to California when she was fairly young. She played piano from an early age. Her father is Richmond Shepard, a mime and improv actor. Vonda has three sisters: Rosetta, Luana, and Brianna. Her mother left the family when Vonda was ten, and her father raised the four girls by himself.
After performing as a backing singer for many years she was eventually given her own recording contract. Shepard's first chart appearance was in 1987 when she recorded a duet with Dan Hill entitled 'Can't We Try'. She released her first self-titled album in 1989 with little fanfare. The album did yield one chart single, Don't Cry Ilene, a mid-tempo, piano-driven jazz-RnB flavored song dealing with the break-up of a relationship between a black woman and a white man, arising from adult peer pressure. The track is sung from the perspective of the woman's white female friend, who harbors a desire to have the man for herself, but keeps her distance out of respect for her friend. The song peaked at 17 on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary chart and stayed on the charts for 12 weeks.
After her third album, Shepard was signed up to appear on Ally McBeal after being spotted by the show's creator David E Kelley. While on the show she recorded two full soundtrack albums and was featured on two other Ally McBeal compilations. The songs Shepard recorded for Ally McBeal soundtrack albums were mainly covers of old songs with lyrics that paralleled what was happening in the title character's life onscreen. Since appearing in the show, Shepard has released two more studio albums and a live album.
Shepard is married to music producer Mitchell Froom and they had their first child, Jack Froom, on 15 April 2006.
Crying
Vonda Shepard Lyrics

I could smile for a while
But I saw you last night
You held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say "Hello" oh you wished me well
You couldn't tell that I'd been
Crying over you
Then you said "so long"
Left me standing all alone
Alone and crying
Crying, crying, crying
It's hard to understand
How the touch of your hand
Can start me crying
I thought that I was over you
But it's true, oh so true
I love you even more
Than I did before
But darling what can I do
For you don't love me
And I'll always be

Vonda Shepard's song "Crying" is a heart-wrenching track that delves into the struggles of a person who can't seem to move on from a past love. The song has a slow and melancholic melody, which perfectly matches the lyrics' emotional weight. The song starts with the singer explaining that they were doing fine and could smile for a while. However, upon encountering their ex-lover, they are reminded of the pain they've been through. The line, "But I saw you last night, You held my hand so tight," and "As you stopped to say 'Hello' oh you wished me well," shows that the singer is aching for their ex, and when their ex says goodbye, they feel left alone and in tears.
In the chorus, the singer confesses that they have been crying over their lost love. They can't understand why just the touch of their ex-lover's hand can stir such intense emotions within them. The second verse reveals that the singer believed they had moved on from their past love but upon seeing their ex, their dormant feelings resurfaced. They admit to still loving their ex-lover, perhaps even more than before, which adds to the tragedy of the situation. The last line of the song, "For you don't love me, And I'll always be, Crying over you," is the singer's truth. They know they will always be heartbroken over their ex-lover.

I was all right for a while
I was doing fine without you
I could smile for a while
I could pretend to be happy without you
But I saw you last night
But then I saw you last night
You held my hand so tight
You held my hand tightly, making me feel something
As you stopped to say "Hello" oh you wished me well
As you stopped to greet me and wish me well
You couldn't tell that I'd been
You didn't know that I had been
Crying over you
Crying because of you
Crying over you
Crying because of you again
Then you said "so long"
Then you said goodbye
Left me standing all alone
Left me standing there by myself
Alone and crying
Crying all alone
Crying, crying, crying
Crying a lot
It's hard to understand
It's difficult to comprehend
How the touch of your hand
How your touch
Can start me crying
Can make me start to cry
I thought that I was over you
I thought I had gotten past you
But it's true, oh so true
But it's clear, it's very true
I love you even more
I love you more than ever
Than I did before
More than I did in the past
But darling what can I do
But my dear, what can I possibly do
For you don't love me
Because you don't love me
And I'll always be
And I will always be
