Vonda Shepard was born in New York but her family relocated to California when she was fairly young. She played piano from an early age. Her father is Richmond Shepard, a mime and improv actor. Vonda has three sisters: Rosetta, Luana, and Brianna. Her mother left the family when Vonda was ten, and her father raised the four girls by himself.
After performing as a backing singer for many years she was eventually given her own recording contract. Shepard's first chart appearance was in 1987 when she recorded a duet with Dan Hill entitled 'Can't We Try'. She released her first self-titled album in 1989 with little fanfare. The album did yield one chart single, Don't Cry Ilene, a mid-tempo, piano-driven jazz-RnB flavored song dealing with the break-up of a relationship between a black woman and a white man, arising from adult peer pressure. The track is sung from the perspective of the woman's white female friend, who harbors a desire to have the man for herself, but keeps her distance out of respect for her friend. The song peaked at 17 on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary chart and stayed on the charts for 12 weeks.
After her third album, Shepard was signed up to appear on Ally McBeal after being spotted by the show's creator David E Kelley. While on the show she recorded two full soundtrack albums and was featured on two other Ally McBeal compilations. The songs Shepard recorded for Ally McBeal soundtrack albums were mainly covers of old songs with lyrics that paralleled what was happening in the title character's life onscreen. Since appearing in the show, Shepard has released two more studio albums and a live album.
Shepard is married to music producer Mitchell Froom and they had their first child, Jack Froom, on 15 April 2006.

Say it, say it again
Someday we'll be together
You're far away from me my love, and just as sure my,
My baby as there are stars above,
I wanna say, I wanna say, I wanna say some day we'll be together;
Yes we will, yes we will say some day we'll be together.
Someday day, some sweet day we will be together
My love is yours, baby
Oh, right from the start
You, you, you possess my soul now honey
And I know, I know you won my heart.
And I wanna say someday (some sweet day) we'll be together.
Ah,yes we will, yes we will
someday we'll be together, tell everybody now
Ah,yes we will, yes we will
Long time ago my, my sweet thing, I made a big mistake, honey.
I say, I said goodbye.
Oh, Oh baby ever ever, ever, never, never since that day now,
Now all I, all I wanna do ah is cry, cry, cry, cry
Oh hey, hey, hey
How long are you, every night,
Just to kiss your sweet, sweet lips,
Hold you ever so tight and I wanna say
Someday we'll be together.
Oh, yes we will, yes we will.
Someday we'll be together.
Oh, yes we will, yes we will.
Someday we'll be together.
Ah, honey, honey
some day we'll be together.
Yes we will, yes we will
The song Someday We'll Be Together by Vonda Shepard is a beautiful ballad about a couple that are currently apart, but believe that they will one day be reunited. The repetition of the phrase "someday we'll be together" creates a feeling of hope and faith in the listener. The first verse talks about how far away the couple is from each other, but the singer is confident that they will be reunited because their love is as sure as the stars above. The second verse expresses the depth of the singer's love for their partner, and how they won their heart right from the start.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the idea that one day the couple will be reunited, and they will be able to say "yes we will" to that fact. The bridge of the song talks about a past mistake that the singer made, and how they have been crying ever since they said goodbye to their sweetheart. The final verse talks about how the singer longs to be with their partner every night, to kiss their sweet lips and hold them tight. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the idea that the couple will one day be together.
Overall, the song Someday We'll Be Together is a touching ode to the power of love and hope. Just watched Ally McBeal 2x04 (at least by 4th time, I'm a big fan of Ally) and I need to listen this song again and again. I think Vonda was the perfect singer for this tv show. I cannot imagine Ally McBeal without Vonda's background voice.
