Experience
Walker Lyrics

Here's to memory, old age and every
Here's to the people who live in a shell
Here's to memory, one more for every
One for the road where pedestrians dwell

So self-assured, complacent and bored
Our hero opens a box on the shelf
Containing advice, so worldly and wise
Welcomes his children to help themselves

Here's to memory, old age and every
Here's to the people who live in a shell
Here's to memory, one more for every
One for the road where pedestrians dwell

He hasn't time for riddle or rhyme
Too busy fighting machines at the plant
He married young, his path is his pocket
Beginnings and endings escape from this end

Here's to memory, old age and every
Here's to the people who live in a shell
Here's to memory, one more for every
One for the road where pedestrians dwell

Baptized, materialized, no time to realise
Caught in the current and drown in the well
Went about fifty, stubborn and empty
Hands out the world for his children to sell

Here's to memory, old age and every
Here's to the people who live in a shell
Here's to memory, one more for every
One for the road where pedestrians dwell

Here's to memory, old age and every
Here's to the people who live in a shell

Here's to memory, one more for every
One for the road where pedestrians dwell

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Walker's song, "Experience," are about the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing memories. The opening lines pay homage to the idea that every memory, no matter how small or insignificant, is worth celebrating. The lyrics move on to describe a character, referred to as "our hero," who is arrogant and self-satisfied. He opens a box containing advice on life, hoping to pass on his wisdom to his children.

Despite his supposed self-assurance, the hero is too busy and preoccupied with his work to take the time to appreciate life's simple moments. He has become entrenched in the material world, fighting machines at his job and focusing only on increasing his wealth. This tunnel vision causes him to miss out on the beauty and significance of life.

The lyrics then take a somber turn, as the hero is described as "stubborn and empty" at the end of his life. He has accumulated wealth and possessions but has failed to make meaningful connections with the people around him. The final lines of the song remind us to celebrate memories and experiences, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem.
