I was thinking about this. Even though I always found it annoying to see in the first seasons the walkers are so 'smart'. I was curious to see why this was the case. guess we will never know.
During the first season, I think ep. 5/6 a short lived group member Jim was dying of a bite and he also saw flashes at one point of walkers right before turning/ dying.
