Nighttime in the switching yard
Get it out on the mainline
Listen to the rhythm of the train go by
Listen to the train whistle whine
Nighttime in the switching yard

See that train...
The midnight train runs both ways

Do it
Doot dat doot dat doot dadoot
Listen to the train whistle whine

Listen to the train
Listen to the track

Overall Meaning

The song Nighttime in the Switching Yard by Warren Zevon is a captivating and evocative track that paints a vivid picture of the atmosphere at night in the switching yard. The lyrics speak of the lure of the train and the thrilling feeling it evokes as it goes by, with the train whistle's melancholic wail and the sound of the wheels on the tracks. The song's opening lyrics, "Nighttime in the switching yard, get it out on the mainline," conjure up images of a bustling yard with trains passing through, and the sense that something is being moved or transported somewhere.

The second set of lyrics, "See that train, the midnight train runs both ways," suggest that the train is more than just a means of transportation but a metaphor for something else. The line "the midnight train runs both ways" implies that the train is traveling to unknown or otherworldly destinations, and the fact that it runs both ways adds a sense of ambiguity to the song's meaning. The repetitive doot dat doot dat doot dadoot underscores lyrical themes of rhythm, and the listener inevitably becomes part of the pulsing, relentless energy of the switching yard.

When I saw Warren play in NYC in the early 1990's, some guy in the crowd shouted out the title of this track, and Warren just said "yeah right," and continued with his show... I doubt he ever played it live after 1978...
