Sometimes An Angel
Waylon Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
He's got his hands in his overall pockets
It's been a day full of twisting and turning
All those thoughts inside
And his small world is shattered
He's broken open wide
Sometimes an angel flies away
Sometimes an angel can pull you down
So leave her to fly boy she's heaven bound
In this small town where the sun always burns the sky
They shared dreams, hope and sometimes lies
She wanted to run wild
Beautiful she opens her wings
But he wouldn't see her
The lyrics to "Sometimes An Angel" by Waylon Jennings tell a story about a young man walking home on a Summer night. As he walks, he has his hands in his overall pockets, perhaps symbolizing a sense of comfort and familiarity. The day has been filled with twisting and turning thoughts that have shaken his small world to its core. Something has shattered his perception and he feels broken open wide.
The song introduces the concept of an angel, who sometimes leaves and leaves the poor boy searching for his own way. It suggests that this angel can also pull the boy down, perhaps implying that sometimes relying on someone else's guidance or presence can hinder personal growth. The chorus advises the boy to let the angel fly, as she is heaven bound, suggesting that her purpose is beyond his grasp and that he must find his own path.
The lyrics also touch upon the backdrop of a small town where the sun always burns the sky. In this town, the boy and the angel shared dreams, hope, and sometimes lies. The angel, described as beautiful, longed to run wild and spread her wings, but the boy failed to see her desires, possibly implying that he held her back in some way.
Overall, "Sometimes An Angel" explores themes of personal growth, the struggle between dependency and independence, and the consequences of failing to recognize and support the dreams and desires of others.
