I Can Get Off On You
Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take back the weed, take back the cocaine baby
Take back the pills, take back the whiskey too
I don't need them now your love was all I was after
I'll make it now that I can get off on you
I can get by on little or nothing at all I know
I can get high just thinkin' about you and so

Well take back the weed, take back the cocaine baby
Take back the pills, take back the whiskey too
I don't need them now your love was all I was after
I'll make it now I can get off on you

Who would have thought this was somethin' that I'd ever do
I'm working it out mellowing out on you
Take back the weed, take back the cocaine baby
Take back the pills, take back the whiskey too
I don't need them now your love was all I was after
I'll make it now that I can get off on you

Take back the weed, take back the cocaine baby
Take back the pills, take back the whiskey too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson's song, "I Can Get Off On You", talk about the transformative power of love. The singer of the song has experienced a change after falling in love with someone. They no longer need drugs and alcohol to get high or feel good. Instead, they are able to "get off" on their partner's love, which is all they need to be happy and content.

The repeated phrase "take back the weed, take back the cocaine baby, take back the pills, take back the whiskey too" emphasizes the idea that the singer is done with these substances. They no longer have a hold on him because he has found something better. The lyrics also suggest that it's not just about giving up vices, but rather replacing them with something positive.

The lyrics also hint at a sense of surprise at this change. The line "who would have thought this was something that I'd ever do" suggests that the singer never expected to give up drugs and alcohol. But the power of love has transformed him in unexpected ways.

Overall, "I Can Get Off On You" is a love song that celebrates the transformative power of love. It shows that when we find someone who truly loves us, we no longer need destructive habits to make us feel good.
