Luckenbach Texas
Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The only two things in life that make it worth livin'
Is guitars that tune good and firm feelin' women
I don't need my name in the marquee lights
I got my song and I got you with me tonight
Maybe it's time we got back to the basics of love

Let's go to Luckenbach, Texas
With Waylon and Willie and the boys
This successful life we're livin'
Got us feuding like the Hatfields and McCoys
Between Hank Williams' pain songs and
Newbury's train songs and "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain"
Out in Luckenbach, Texas, ain't nobody feelin' no pain

So baby, let's sell your diamond ring
Buy some boots and faded jeans and go away
This coat and tie is choking me
In your high society, you cry all day
We've been so busy keepin' up with the Jones
Four car garage and we're still building on
Maybe it's time we got back to the basics of love

Let's go to Luckenbach, Texas
With Waylon and Willie and the boys
This successful life we're livin' got us feudin'
Like the Hatfield and McCoys
Between Hank Williams' pain songs and
Newbury's train songs and "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain"
Out in Luckenbach, Texas, ain't nobody feelin' no pain

Let's go to Luckenbach, Texas
Willie and Waylon and the boys
This successful life we're livin's got us feudin'
Like the Hatfield and McCoys
Between Hank Williams' pain songs

And Jerry Jeff's train songs and "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain"
Out in Luckenbach, Texas, there ain't nobody feelin' no pain

The song suggests that in order to escape the stress and superficiality of city living, we need to go back to a simpler time and place.

Jennings mentions going to a place called Luckenbach, Texas, where there is a sense of peace and freedom. There, nobody is feeling any pain, and everyone is just enjoying the good life. The song also references legendary musicians like Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, and Jerry Jeff Walker, who have all contributed to the country music canon. Woke up a few days ago with this song in my head - and I don't listen to C&W. I haven't heard it play anywhere for over 40 years, yet there it was. I was six years old when this song came out. I remember lying on my mom and dad's bed listening to their old AM Radio just amazed at the beauty of songs like this.

One of the best C&W songs ever - guess it's in my DNA. :)

Thank you for posting this.

I am jealous; in a GOOD way. I speak as a freedom loving Cdn patriot that served my country for about ten years; I am looking to move elsewhere. This song certainly sparks my interest over what some of the smaller rural towns in Texas might be like. I wouldn't miss the winters up here much either!!!🥶Keep the Faith folks.
