1. Wayne Marshall, the reggae artist
2. Wayne Marshall, the British pianist, organist and conductor
1.Wayne Marshallβs story is one of rites of passage. Born Wayne Mitchell, the roller coaster ride that made up his young life is what drives Wayne Marshall the artiste. Early years were spent in the Barbican area of Kingston, until his Father - a self-made successful businessman β relocated the family uptown.
Destiny moved the Mitchell family 3 doors away from the front gate of the Father of digital Dancehall, Lloyd βKing Jammyβ James. The King had sons of young Wayneβs age group, so the Waterhouse studio soon became a pre-ordained second home for the music-loving teenager. βAutomatically we get a piece of the ghetto inna we too,β he tells me from my passenger seat, trying to absorb the fast-fading cool of the A/C in my whip. βWe deh deep inna di ghetto a day time at the studio, so we get to realize the livety and we get fi soak in wid the ghetto people and ketch dem mentality to a level,β he adds, acknowledging the importance of the ghetto education he received at βJamminβsβ studio. Sparring with the big manβs offspring meant that the studio was at their disposal, causing Wayne to βstart checking music on a serious levelβ from an early age. It was early β94 and Bounty Killer was as hot as Hell. Marshall recalls Elephant Man in tear-up clothes, Determine begging. Big artists came and went all day long. βAt King Jammyβs I got to know the ropes in the deep heart of Dancehall - dub plate style!β
Using his pass to the Mecca of Dancehall wisely, Wayne began copying Bounty Killerβs style and pattern at school. βBecause I was at Jammyβs I would always have strictly pre-release Bounty Killer material and done the place! Any new tune that Jammyβs released for Bounty I learnt them straight away and was ready to pop it off anytime anyone asked me at school - all day, every day, 1st verse, 2nd verse, anything you want.β The fruits of that labor are tangible in Wayne Marshall the artist and Wayne Mitchell the acclaimed songwriter. βFrom young I saw the channel of originality I should run through,β enthuses Marshall, forgetting the failing A/C for a moment. βThat desire to be original, to be an artiste, was directly from Bounty Killer. His levels of meditation and the standard he brought the lyrics to made me realize it was something I should be a part of.β Age difference and Bountyβs fearsome rep for being unapproachable kept the two entertainerβs paths apart. For the time being.
Marshallβs abounding self-confidence allows him to freely acknowledge his skillz, and he recognised his own talent for lyical construction as soon as, he started penning soulful lyrics at 14. βFrom I was 7 years old I always dreamed, visioned, of performing in front of huge crowds of people,β smiles Marshall, βuntil I realised I could sing and make the girls dem cry, so I just sang and made the girls dem cry!β
Uptown aspirations dictate that children grow up to become lawyers, doctors and pilots but Marshallβs Mother and Father let his free spirit express, itself. βAs an uptown yoot, you are convinced that you should strive for something your schooling can bring you, not something that your natural talent can bring forth,β he explains. βI look on it as a sin for me to neglect my natural talent and force myself to do something else.β Marshall ainβt tryinβ to imagine what he would be doing if he wasnβt doing music. βNothing else could make me feel happy, only music. I couldnβt work and be happy. When I was young I used to listen to music and sit down and wonder how I used to feel this shit so.β As with most things, it didnβt take Marshall long to work it out: βMusicians feel and hear music differently from people who just listen to music. When you have the vibes to write and create music you feel the real musicians around you easily. Sade - I felt her deeply growing up. We used to get vibes from all different places - Sanchez, Atlantic Starr, Bel Biv Devoe, Baby Face, Beres - all dem cats.β

Thats me on the corner,
Thats you at the stop... light,
Begging for a dollar,
Without a place to sleep at night,
But on one is a question sign,
Some how you took the wrong roads since you were a child,
(DUM, DUM, DUM)
Thats me in the school yard,
And thats you in the school fight,
Trying to please your ego,
Always want to prove a point,
Hanging out with the wrong crowd,
Drinking and smoking joints,
I'm focused on my subjects trying to make my future bright,
Hey, thats me at the studio,
And thats you on the crack pipe,
Searching for the answers,
And still hiding from the light,
Now we're contemplating another junction in life,
You live with your desicions,
It all come down to choice,
Hey,
()
It all come down to choice, all come down to choice whoa, It all come down to choice, all come down to choice,
(DUM, DUM, DUM)
()
Now this is me in the future,
And this is you still way behind,
Lately I've been busy,
While you're busy wasting time,
Waiting for a hand out,
Always trying to skip the line,
Chasing down tommorow and you still can't find your stride,
(DUM, DUM, DUM)
Hey, that's me with the victory,
And thats you at the starting line,
Regrets of yesteryear,
Always linger on your mind,
Now we're contemplating another junction in life,
You live with your desicions,
It all come down to choice,
Hey,

It all come down to choice, all come down to choice whoa, It all come down to choice, all come down to choice,

So what could have been,
Will no longer be,
Cah Jah put it infront you and you still didn't see,
What should have been,
Is just a mystery,
Cah Jah put it infront you and you still didn't see,
Although you talented to he highest degree,
Now you're just a shadow of your true quality,
I made use of my opportunity,
Now I'm where I wanna be,
The song "On the Corner" by Wayne Marshall talks about two individuals who share a common history but took different paths in life. It explores the theme of choices and how they shape our future. The song starts by introducing the two characters that the song revolves around. They are both on the street corner, but one is begging for money while the other watches from across the street. The difference between the two is that one made choices that led him to success while the other made choices that led him to poverty. The song uses a series of flashbacks to show how the two characters' choices influenced their lives.
In the first verse, we see the two characters in a school setting. One is studying hard while the other is getting into fights with his peers. The second verse explores their adult lives, with one character in the recording studio and the other addicted to crack. The chorus emphasizes that everything comes down to the choices we make. The final verse shows one character successful, and the other still struggling to make ends meet.
The song "On the Corner" has a powerful message that resonates with anyone who has ever made a life-changing decision. It reminds us that every decision we make has a consequence that can shape our future. The song encourages us to be mindful of the choices we make and to take responsibility for the outcomes.
