While leading worship at a Christian youth camp, the father of one of the children videotaped Watson's performance and sent it to a Nashville industry rep. His debut LP, Workin' in the Final Hour, followed in 1980. A series of albums like 1982's New Lives for Old, 1984's Man in the Middle and 1985's Giants in the Land followed before his breakthrough record, the Grammy-nominated Watercolor Ponies, appeared in 1987.
Watson also notched well over a dozen Dove Award nominations, and launched a number of CCM chart-toppers including "The Class of '95," "Be in Her Eyes," "A Beautiful Place." "Walk in the Dark," "More of You," "It's Time," "Home Free" and "Almighty."
In 1995 he signed to Warner/Alliance to issue Field of Souls; The Way Home followed three years later. Appropriately, his song "For Such a Time as This" was used as the theme for the 1999 season premiere of CBS's popular series Touched by an Angel, reflecting Watson's own growing popularity in the secular music arena. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

But Heavenly Father
If you know my heart
Surely you can read my mind
Good people underneath the sea of grief
Some get up and walk away
Some will find ultimate relief
Home Free, eventually
At the ultimate healing we will be Home Free
Home Free, oh I've got a feeling
At the ultimate healing
We will be Home Free
Out in the corridors we pray for life
A mother for her baby, A husband for his wife
Sometimes the good die young
It's sad but true
And while we pray for one more heartbeat
The real comfort is with you
You know pain has little mercy
And suffering's no respecter of age, of race or position
I know every prayer gets answered
But the hardest one to pray is slow to come
Oh Lord, not mine, but Thy will be done
Let it be...
[Chorus]
Home Free, eventually
At the ultimate healing gonna be Home Free
Home Free, oh its more than a feeling
At the ultimate healing
Gonna be Home Free
The song "Home Free" by Wayne Watson is an emotional and spiritual journey that explores the themes of grief, loss, and ultimate redemption. The song starts off with the singer confessing that he's trying not to judge God too harshly for the pain and suffering in the world. He acknowledges that he can't help but wonder if God is aware of his heartaches and concerns, and if He is, why does He allow so much sorrow to exist.
The chorus of the song offers a glimmer of hope, as the singer proclaims with certainty that there is a place where everything is going to be alright. This place is called Home Free, and it's where we will find ultimate healing and peace. The second verse of the song depicts people praying for their loved ones who are sick, injured, or dying. The singer notes that death is an inevitable reality of life, and while people may pray for one more heartbeat or one more day, the ultimate comfort comes from God.
The final verse of the song is a plea to God, asking Him to heed the prayers of the faithful and grant them comfort and relief. The singer acknowledges that pain and suffering exist in the world and that prayers don't always get answered in the way we expect them to. But he also trusts that God's will is ultimately what's best for us, and he submits himself to that will.
Overall, "Home Free" is a poignant and moving song that encourages listeners to put their faith and trust in God, even in the midst of life's toughest challenges.

Exceptionally profound lyrics. Exactly what happens when persons oftentimes wait for healing; but knowing it might not come. "Home Free" gives hope of a brighter day with no more pain. Well done, Wayne. Trust me, I keep playing this song ever since I found it.

I remember almost 30 years ago after school, my mom always played this song, now two days shy of mother's day I lost her and now I just had to find this song to share with my siblings

A friend of mine right now is praying for her fifty year old baby who's dying of liver cancer. I can just see the heartbreak in her eyes. He's still her little boy no matter how old he gets.
