Please don't think that there is something wrong
I won't cover it up, just give me time
I won't cover it up, just give me time
As I start to lose myself
I just need somebody's help
And you realise I was never perfect from the start
Now you see, who I am
Every now and then I break your heart,
And you realise I was never perfect from the start
Now you see, who I am
How can I, tell you everything about this
I'll try but I'm afraid that I might fail,
I won't cover it up, just give me time
I won't cover it up, just give me time
As I start to lose myself
I just need somebody's help
Every now and then I fall apart
And you realise I was never perfect from the start
Now you see, who I am
Every now and then I break your heart,
And you realise I was never perfect from the start
Now you see, who I am
I've tried a million times, it's proving hard to find,
I just need somebody's help,
Behind closed doors is where, I keep my burdens close,
So you can't see who I am
I've tried a million times, it's proving hard to find,
I just need somebody's help,
Behind closed doors is where, I keep my burdens close,
So you can't see who I am
Every now and then I'll fall apart
And you realise I was never perfect from the start
Now you see, who I am
Every now and then I'll break your heart,
And you realise I was never perfect from the start
But do you see who I am?
The lyrics of "Now and Then" by We Are the Ocean speak to the fear of showing vulnerability and imperfection to others. The singer is speaking to someone they care about and admitting that there is a side of themselves that the other person has not seen before. Despite this fear, the singer insists they won't cover it up and simply need time to open up. As the song progresses, the singer reveals that they have tried to reveal this side of themselves before and failed, but they still need help to do so. The chorus expands on this theme. The singer admits that they have fallen apart and broken the heart of the person they care about, but they hope that this has allowed the other person to see who they truly are.
The theme of vulnerability and fear of judgment is a common one in music. However, We Are the Ocean has taken this theme further by acknowledging the potential consequences of not opening up to others, even those we care about. The lyrics propose that trying to keep oneself closed off from others can lead to falling apart and hurting those we care about. By acknowledging our imperfections and allowing others to see who we truly are, we can build stronger and more meaningful relationships.
