After their debut LP release, Highways, in 2012 the band started gaining national notoriety and laid the foundations of a loyal fan base. Reinforced by their most accomplished work to date, 2015’s Not A Chance EP, which was released through Panic State Records. The record’s single “Bridge Burner” quickly amassed over 1,000,000 plays on Spotify.
Based in Ottawa and collecting members from the far reaches of Eastern Canada, We Were Sharks continue to wield the full-force of Canadian alternative music. Through a penchant for blending melodic harmony with powerful dissonance they continue to produce infectious music. Even though these boys already have a lot of mileage under their belts, their book is far from written.
Sober
We Were Sharks Lyrics

I was too busy trying to turn something into nothing
My heads up in outer space
At least I don't have to hear about all of this tomorrow now
I'm doing fine
I've done my time
There's no turning back
Forgive and forget, I'm not there yet
It's hard to do when you're sober
Rehearse my lines to cut all my ties
It's hard to say that it's over
Next time you come around
Bring a glass and a bottle maybe we get to the bottom of this
Or check the lost and found
To see if anyone picked up the rest of our relationship
I want to forget or get over
It's hard to do
when you're sober and your mind is clear. The singer in We Were Sharks's song "Sober" reflects on a past relationship and the difficulties that come with moving on. The opening lines highlight the singer's state of mind during the relationship, as they weren't thinking straight and were too focused on trying to salvage something that ultimately wasn't meant to be. Their head being up in outer space suggests a detachment from reality and a lack of focus on the present.
The chorus emphasizes the challenge of forgiving and forgetting when one is not yet ready. The singer acknowledges that it's hard to let go when sober, as they are fully aware of the pain and emotions tied to the past relationship. They try to rehearse their lines, indicating an attempt to distance themselves emotionally by cutting ties, but it's still difficult to claim that it's truly over.
In the following verse, the singer expresses a desire for closure and resolution. They suggest that the next time the ex-partner comes around, they should bring a glass and a bottle so they can have an honest conversation and possibly reach an understanding. The mention of checking the lost and found symbolizes the remnants of their relationship and the hope of finding some closure.
Overall, "Sober" captures the struggle of moving on from a past relationship when one is no longer clouded by substance use or emotional numbness. It depicts the complexities of forgiveness, forgetting, and finding closure in a situation where emotions are deeply intertwined.
