After their debut LP release, Highways, in 2012 the band started gaining national notoriety and laid the foundations of a loyal fan base. Reinforced by their most accomplished work to date, 2015’s Not A Chance EP, which was released through Panic State Records. The record’s single “Bridge Burner” quickly amassed over 1,000,000 plays on Spotify.
Based in Ottawa and collecting members from the far reaches of Eastern Canada, We Were Sharks continue to wield the full-force of Canadian alternative music. Through a penchant for blending melodic harmony with powerful dissonance they continue to produce infectious music. Even though these boys already have a lot of mileage under their belts, their book is far from written.
Never Looked Better
We Were Sharks Lyrics

Middle of the night still lying alone
And did I drink too much again, can I get out of my head?
If I stare at my phone long enough will it explode
We could talk but what's the use, I always say too much too soon
I'll step back, I wanna get out but your heart won't stand up
I'll step back, I wanna get out but your heart won't stand
Can we find our way back and live the past again
Cold rain in the summer
Can we find our way back and live the past again
Not dressed for the weather, but you never looked better
Moving on like it's real to me
Playing the role even when the scene ends
I can act like nothing hurts, say the lines till something works
If I stare at the light long enough will I go blind?
We could talk but what's the use, when I just want a reason to see you
The lyrics to We Were Sharks's song "Never Looked Better" depict a sense of longing and nostalgia for a past relationship. The opening lines set a lonely and cold atmosphere, emphasizing the feeling of being alone in the middle of the night. The singer questions their own actions, wondering if they have once again consumed too much alcohol as a means to escape their thoughts and emotions. The mention of staring at their phone suggests a desire for contact and connection, but simultaneously a fear of saying too much and revealing too many vulnerabilities.
The chorus reflects a desire to move on from the past relationship, yet being held back by lingering feelings and emotions. The singer acknowledges that their heart still holds onto the hope of rekindling the past, but also recognizes the need to step back and let go. The longing to "live the past again" and the contradictory imagery of "cold rain in the summer" reflect the bittersweet nature of the nostalgia they feel. Despite recognizing that they may not be dressed appropriately for the emotional turmoil, they can't help but admit that the person they once loved "never looked better."
The second verse delves into the idea of putting up a front and pretending that everything is fine, even when it's not. The singer describes themselves as playing a role, continuing to say the lines even when the scene has ended. This emphasizes the effort they are putting in to hide their pain and maintain a sense of normalcy. The lyrics express uncertainty about the effectiveness of this act, questioning whether staring at the light for too long will make them go blind. The longing for a reason to see the person again highlights the singer's desire for closure or a chance to reconcile.
Overall, "Never Looked Better" captures the conflicting emotions of longing for a past love while also recognizing the need to move forward. It explores themes of vulnerability, fear of saying too much, and the struggle to let go of past connections.
