Cleopatra
Weezer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We grow old, our hearts are dim
But our minds are free, to fly where they will
Your beauty is faded, you're a broken shell
It's only the weak that fall for your spell

You can't control me no more Cleopatra, patra, patra
You can't control me no more Cleopatra, patra, patra
It's time to move, to the next life
You'll be reborn as a beautiful child
You'll turn the heads of a million men
Lady Pharaoh, the jewel of the Nile

You can't control me no more Cleopatra, patra, patra
You can't control me no more Cleopatra, patra, patra

All the wine we tasted, all the love we made
All the strumming lyres will decorate your grave
All the ecstasy is gone gone gone away

Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty
You're older, you're colder
Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty
You're older, you're colder

You can't control me no more Cleopatra, patra (patra), patra (patra)
You can't control me no more Cleopatra, patra (patra), patra (patra)
You can't control me no more Cleopatra, patra (patra), patra (patra)
You can't control me no more Cleopatra, patra (patra), patra (patra)

Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty
You're older, you're colder

Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty
You're older, you're colder

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Weezer's song "Cleopatra" deal with the concept of the passing of time and the loss of beauty and power that inevitably comes with it. The song refers to Cleopatra, the legendary queen of Egypt, as a symbol of this loss, as she was known for her great beauty and legendary power, only to eventually lose both.

The lyrics paint a picture of Cleopatra as a fading symbol of beauty, a broken shell of her former self. The song acknowledges that while our bodies may grow old and our hearts may become dim, our minds remain free to imagine and explore. The song suggests that Cleopatra's power over others was based on her physical beauty, and that now that her beauty has faded, she has lost her ability to control others.

The chorus, which repeats the line "You can't control me no more Cleopatra," emphasizes this idea of Cleopatra's decline, suggesting that she no longer holds the power she once did. The song then ends with a repetition of the phrase "Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty / You're older, you're colder," emphasizing that no matter how powerful and beautiful one may be, time will eventually catch up with them.

Overall, "Cleopatra" is a powerful and introspective song about the passage of time and the loss of power and beauty that comes with it.

This is almost like Greatest Man with how it starts very folk-y and goes over a few different styles and I'm loving this record so far.

Blyndblitz

The "you cant control me no more " part is in 5/4 when the song's regular beat is 4/4. gives it such a cool push forwards, reminds me of Don't Let me down by the beatles.

ARPANET Troll

Rivers' singing on this track, especially in the second half, is phenomenal. He's putting more passion and nuance in his voice than I've heard from him in a long time. The harmonies with Brian are great too.

@linkin park#1999 yes. A band once known for the amazing emotional weight behind everything they did. Just because the 00s has soured your view of the band doesn’t mean you have to try and sour it for fans.

@Peter Third Music I really like weezer, make believe just got me and all their albums

Peter Third Music

@linkin park#1999 make believe?

It’s okay in my opinion but certainly on the weaker side of their work. If you like that album then Maladroit and Van Weezer should be right up your alley
