Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Weezer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Welcome to your life
There's no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you
Acting on your best behavior
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world
It's my own design
It's my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I'll be right behind you

So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

I can't stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the

Say that you'll never, never, never, never need it
One headline, why believe it?
Everybody wants to rule the world

All for freedom and for pleasure

Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

Overall Meaning

The song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Weezer appears to be a commentary on the human desire for power and control. The opening lines of "Welcome to your life, there's no turning back, even while we sleep we will find you" suggest that the world is constantly changing and evolving, and that people must adapt to survive. The lines "Acting on your best behavior, turn your back on mother nature" seem to imply that humans must sometimes suppress their natural instincts in order to succeed. The chorus of the song, with the repeated line "Everybody wants to rule the world," drives home the idea that the desire for power and control is a fundamental human trait.

The verse "It's my own design, it's my own remorse, help me to decide, help me make the most of freedom and of pleasure" paints a picture of an individual struggling to determine their own future. The lines "Nothing ever lasts forever, everybody wants to rule the world" suggest that people often pursue power and control without realizing that their achievements are transitory. The bridge ("I can't stand this indecision, married with a lack of vision") further reinforces the idea that people are often aimless in their pursuit of power.

The final verse ("Say that you'll never, never, never, never need it, one headline, why believe it?") seems to suggest that people often pursue power for its own sake, without any clear idea of how to use it. In the end, the song seems to be a critique of the human desire for power and control and a warning against pursuing these goals without considering their true consequences.

@RhymesWithCarbon

This cover sits at the great middle ground between “making it our own” and “being true to the original”

@Tripl3333

very true...

@martinroach608

I kinda wanted it to weigh just a little heavier on the "making it our own" side. Just a wee bit. Still enjoyable though.
If you want to check a version thats really "making it our own". check out "Ted Leo and the Pharmacists AV club". It really has the rawness of a live performance, because it is

@DMLand

Underrated comment. The whole album exists in that "most excellent" space.

@damianosavraammisaelidis9727

Indeed. They kept it in full respect without "disrespecting" the original one. By the way what does rhyme with carbon after all?

@edwardharley9

great point!!

THEY KEEP THE INTEGRITY OF EACH COVER BUT STILL SOUND LIKE WEEZER!!!! I LOVE IT!!

@Tripl3333

yup...true

@therealaustinhendrix1978

I find their cover of No Scrubs hilarious. The fact that they kept the original lyrics to the song was hilarious to me.

@mastod0n1

I think this sounds like Tears for Fears. Just because Rivers Cuomo is singing doesn't make it sound like Weezer. This is a faithful recreation of the song and it was done really well but it wasn't "Weezer-ified" other than the fact that the band is playing the song.
