Wells is also the recording project of Chicagoans Chris Howaniec and Zane Ranney, both members of now-defunct folk-rock band World's First Flying Machine. This Wells plays mid-to-downtempo rock, drawing from its influences in psych rock, slowcore, ambient and early-'90s emo. Chris Howaniec is the songwriter, arranger, vocalist and producer, playing all parts on their two EPs ("Wells" and "Feel Bad") except the drums, which Zane Ranney is infinitely better at.
Wells is also also the name of a former four-man group from Charlottesville, VA that disbanded in January 2006.

And bear a child inside, dead already
With your fist that's bleeding from times of war
All you aim for is an untied breath
And for the case you'd fail you brought your knife along
I will be so sad to hear you're dead
And that's the house you'll live in forever
Punch a hole into with your love
Don't you cry for I love your thought
Don't let your fiery soul burn down
We're in this together, we'll always be
Fight your war inside your jail
I see you fidget hard in your trap
Smashed your head at the wall, this far you got
The lyrics to Wells's song "Sold" delve into themes of longing, despair, and the struggle to find fulfillment in a world that often falls short of our expectations. The opening lines, "Wanted more than the world could give / And bear a child inside, dead already / With your fist that's bleeding from times of war," speaks to the singer's yearning for something greater than what life has offered them. It suggests a deep inner pain caused by disappointment and a feeling of being trapped in their circumstances.
The lines, "All you aim for is an untied breath / And for the case you'd fail you brought your knife along / I will be so sad to hear you're dead," explore the singer's desperate desire to break free from their current situation, even if it means resorting to self-destructive tendencies. The imagery of an "untied breath" suggests a longing for freedom or release, while the mention of a knife reflects the potential for harm. The singer expresses genuine concern for the singer's well-being, acknowledging that they would be saddened to hear of their demise.
The next section, "Nature's built a wall around you / And that's the house you'll live in forever / Punch a hole into with your love," portrays a sense of confinement, as if the world itself has boxed the singer in. However, the idea of "punching a hole into [the wall] with your love" suggests that the power of love can still serve as a means of breaking free from these constraints. It implies that genuine, heartfelt connections with others can provide a source of strength and the possibility of transcendence.
The final lines, "Don't you cry for I love your thought / Don't let your fiery soul burn down / We're in this together, we'll always be / Fight your war inside your jail / I see you fidget hard in your trap / Smashed your head at the wall, this far you got," convey a sense of support and camaraderie. The singer reassures the singer that they are valued and loved, encouraging them to persevere even while facing internal battles. The imagery of fighting a war inside a jail speaks to the internal struggle of the singer, who is shown as being trapped and desperate for escape. Despite their suffering, the singer acknowledges the singer's efforts and determination.
Overall, "Sold" captures the complex emotions of longing, despair, and the search for meaning within the confines of a flawed world. It portrays the importance of love, connection, and resilience in the face of adversity.
