The Life
Wendy & Lisa Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Everyone has to be somewhere
I am here
Testing a dream
The pressure of dreams is
The killer of dreams
And it only gets harder
This is the life
Everyone has to do something
I am here
Doing what I do best
Fearing that worry
Will trigger all my fears
And it only gets harder
And it only gets harder
(How did I get so serious)
Time is the monster
All of us fight the same monster
To win
I scream when I breath
But, this is the life
This is the life
This is the life
Wendy & Lisa's "The Life" portrays the complexities of living in the modern world, where fulfilling dreams and chasing success is both a daunting and a necessary pursuit. The opening line "This is the life, everyone has to be somewhere, I am here" sets the tone for the song, with the songstress acknowledging the reality of the situation she is in. She understands that everyone is on their own journey, and her journey is here. However, success does not come easy, as the pressure of fulfilling one's dream could end up being the killer of the dream.
The song progresses with the artist delving deeper into the internal thoughts that come with chasing success. As much as she loves what she does, she fears that worrying will trigger all her fears, which is something that most people can relate to. As much as we try to control our worries, they still end up creeping up on us, creating unnecessary chaos. The lyrics "And it only gets harder" is a reminder that as much as we keep pushing ourselves to achieve our dreams, it only gets harder, and we should prepare ourselves for the rough journey ahead.
The song ends with the artist acknowledging the monster that is time, which can be a significant impediment in achieving one's dreams. We all have to fight against time to achieve our dreams and ultimately win, which is why the artist screams when she breathes. It's a struggle that she has come to accept; this is the life, and it's not always easy.
